Almost home, Early S and others I need you. 930 timing

My major problem was the vacuum system I believe. I went over everything and it runs pretty good now. One thing that baffles me is theat I cannot get the timing right to my book specs. I will give a breakdown of wat is happening.

When I attach a timing light and let her idle at 950-1000rpms (vacuum hose connected) I cannot get to the desired 7 degrees ATDC that I need, the closest I can get is 15 degrees ATDC. I run out of adjustment at the lockdown adjuster of the distributor. This seems very odd to me as in order to get it running decent I have the distributor turned as far counter clockwise as it will go. I never took the distributor out so it can't be off a gear. Before the tune up it was right in the middle of the adjustment and it wont even run there now. The vacuum advance is working well as it does advance with throttle quite a bit and there is plenty of vacuum to the fingertip test. When I disconnect the vacuum line it runs faster. and timing is at Z1 with the hose disconnected and idling. This just all seems odd to me. It's like I have too much vacuum now. I bypassed the thermo vacuum deal that waits 5-10 seconds to open and alow vacuum to pass but no difference. I am headed home now and will try other things but this is just weird. Am I putting my car at risk here. Thanks.

Does your dizzy just have one vacuum line or two? If it's just got a vacuum advance, then I don't think there should be any vacuum on the line at idle. Sounds like maybe you've got your vacuum line run to the wrong side of the throttle body.

Just my guess.

No, Iv'e only got one vacumm line to the dizzy. I know it its for retard but Like I said it's almost like it's too powerful. Maybe I should just get a rebuilt dizzy and call it good. I am mentaly at the point of throwing parts at it now.

Perhaps the problem is that before you didn't have enough vacuum and someone tried to compensate by taking the dizzy out and moving it over one tooth to get an accurate timing. Now that you have the vacuum retarding working properly the timing is way off and you might need to readjust the dizzy appropriately by shifting it over one tooth.
