Question Question about RS door panels and lock knobs

Hey, all -

I am making slow (very slow) but steady progress on my interior overhaul.

Tonight I was test fitting one of the new RS door panels and I ran into an unexpected problem. Surely I'm not the first one to stumble upon this.

It seems that the original door panel was thicker, so the backing plate of the door lock knob assembly is now loose. Like flopping around loose.

Is there some trick to this or is there a different part # that is more shallow for an RS door? Or maybe I'm just tired and not thinking straight.

As always... Thanks in advance!

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

I took the route of making my own RS style door panels out of fiber glass I had the same issue. What I ended up doing was putting some soft foam behind them to push them forward a bit thus removing this flop.

Regards
Dave

Same here. I made door panels from pre-cut blanks. Used foam underneath the leather to build up to the door lock ring. It actually takes a pretty good amount. The lock ring looks pretty good though when it "sits" down into the foam.

Thanks, guys.

I need to go to the local auto trim store to get some foam for the ceiling anyway.

May be a stupid question, but is there a particular type of foam that is best for this kind of application? Since this is going in the door, I wouldn't want something that would possibly hold moisture.

I used 3mm closed cell foam. It comes in various densities and I picked the firmest one of the 3 types I saw. I think the higher densities look nicer when the door parts (handles, speakers, release) are screwed in - doesn't depress quite so much.

My original panels had an open cell foam which is less water resistant. If your panels are waterproof then it shouldn't matter so much. I sprayed my MDF with clear paint to achieve some sort of waterproofing.

If you have a auto upholstery shop near by, go down and pick up the foam from them.
