Was window tint ever a factory option on SCs?

I never thought I would like window tinting, but my 79 SC has very good tinting. I am wondering if it is possible this was a factory option. It appears to be part of the glass itself, and not a coating.

There's a little greenish tint to the glass of that era. It's not what I'd consider tinted, in the modern sense of the word, but it's not completely clear, either.

Any darker tint was not an option.

Ok, good to know. Mine is definitely tinted, so therefore it must have been done when the glass was replaced at some point.

Can you post pics, of the tint, i am interested in tinting mine this year.
Thanks

My 79SC has factory glass and it has a lite tint. I had a darker tint installed but soon grew to dislike it and removed it (after getting a ticket:rolleyes:

Yes, it was an option:

M 568: Heat-insulating glass, Tinted side windows and tinted windscreen, Windscreen without green top-tint

I have it on my 82 SC and on 68T

That's the greenish tint I was talking about. It's not all that dark, compared to modern tinted glass, which sometimes is so dark you can't see through it from outside the car.

Care to post a photo, so others can see what you have?

Sure, probably tomorrow. I'm already at work and I'm busy-busy tonight.
It has heating wires across the back window, and all windows are darkened. There is no greenish tint to it, just dark.
If 100 is ghetto-tint and 0 is totally clear, I'd say this is around 35%.

My windows are tinted as well, the PO had them done i would imagine at least ten years ago ... anything is good to keep the sun off the dash and the seats !

Cheers !

I had mine done, but not in a dark shade. Mine are about the same compared to the factory greenish tint as the factory tint is to clear. If you didn't know they were tinted, you'd think they weren't. I only did it because this particular film, made by Llumar, is some sort of ceramic stuff designed to block thermal energy, so it keeps the interior cooler. And it's more than hype. It really works.

I wanted something that looked stock, but helped with blocking the sun. This is with the tint.

Here are mine. The pictures aren't quite perfect, because of dynamic camera light adjustment and all.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336856359.jpg

I'm not sure that it was an option in the US. As far as I can tell, all of the US cars (at least all of the later ones) and all of the Canadian cars got the tinted glass as standard. Clear glass was available in Europe, but not here. The first few model years clear glass might have been available here (and maybe on the 912's) but for the most part, we didn't get a vote.

I don't recall seeing M568 on the option lists in that era.

That looks like an aftermarket tint, to my eye, because of the color. Have you looked closely around the edges and under the rubber seals?

I'm positive that (at least on the side windows) it isn't an applied film. However it could easily have been replaced from stock. I've come to appreciate it a lot, especially when the sun is off where my visor can't block it, but still in my eyes.
