Rear wheel bearing
One of the rear wheels of '73 911 had some play (rocking), and made grinding noise when coasting at 5th gear. So I changed the bearing at the local shop last month. Now, the grinding noise is gone, but there is still little play (a lot less than before, but there is!) on the wheel. The other side does not have any play at all.
Is it ok to have a little play? Did not the shop do the right job? Is there possibly someting else wrong? ![]() Thanks |

I'm not sure about older 911's or rear wheels. But if it's anything like the front, it should be a 5-10 minute job to check and tighten it up. You can check for play by raising the rear of the car and pushing the wheel up/out from the bottom and in from the top. That will tell you how bad the play is.

My rear wheels rotate slightly even with the -ark brake on. I've wondered about this. But I am pretty sure you should not have wobbly play. That is if you grab the tire (while it is jacked up off the ground) and push/pull, there should be no play, I think.

I'd take it back to the shop.
When I did mine. There is little, to no play. That bearing is so damn big. And with that axle stub going thru it. I don't know how there could be much. My 02c.
