Weight difference between tubs - 74 to 89

Hi

Is there in any weight difference between the bare tubs from 1974 to 1989? Or does the added weight come from heavier equipment (seats, engine, etc)?

/Johan

The 74 is quite a bit lighter than the 89. I think to the tune of about 200 pounds. Power seats, power brakes, power windows, heavier exhaust, (did 89 already have power steering?). My old 74 started out as manual windows, no a/c etc and I think was 2400 pounds.

I removed the rear seats, insulation, light weight starter, light weight battery, racing seats, and had fiberglass front and rear bumpers. However, I added a roll bar, air conditioning, 3 oil coolers, steel turbo flares and much larger tires and wheels (17x9 front with 245's and 17 x 11 rear with 275's so much heavier than the 6's with 205's) ... anyway long story short all the subtracts and adds it wound up at 2385 pounds on the scales.

nil weight difference between the bare tubs from 1974 to 1989?

even the bare 964 tub weighs little more than an early 911 tub

the added weight comes from heavier equipment as you surmise, tho P AG actually lightened some components starting in 1974 - seats, R. banana arms, F. susp. crossbar & etc.

Doah! I need to stop skimming. I only ingested weight difference 74 to 89 and managed to overlook the bare tub aspect. So plus 1 on what RWebb posted.

Actually, there are some differences and the early tub is lighter. I can't give you specific data but there are some reinforcements on the later tub that were not present on the early tub. The area around the fuel tank comes to mind, as an example.

I actually have a late '89 (not the 964) tub in my garage that I am working on. I have also done a 1975 bare metal rebuild a few years back and have noticed a few differences, but they are minor.

The major one is that there are some fairly strong steel reinforcements around the fuel tank area - a couple of pieces of steel about 80 cm long and "U" shaped. There are some extra dimpling and brackets reinforcements in a few spots.

I have no way to weigh mine, but I would suspect that the bare tub weights are within 20kg of each other, probably less. I believe Frere has somewhere in his book the tub weights for the pre-74 and post-74 versions and IIRC there is a difference at the tub only level but it is small.

Heavens, the stampings on the '89 still have the indents for the through body sway bar in the front and other stuff. I am not sure they changed any pressing unless they had to.

then there are the targa/cab/coupe differences

there is an (are several) old threads where I posted wt. data on the 964 tubs and early tubs from people with pretty accurate scales who were epoxy dipping the entire tub

you'd have to search them up, but IIRC it was only ~ 40 lbs.

an early tub can also be stiffened considerably, and TRE/Dave B. posted a subjective comparison of the feel, and IIRC also the wt. addition; the owner also posted his fondness for that mod

IIRC, that was what is sometimes called the Framboise car, or maybe it was Fraise - I am pretty catholic about consuming red fruits...

anyway, some search time will be rewarded

There were some changes in sheet metal thicknesses. IIRC, the targa longitudinals got a bit thicker around '86.
