Ball cup at the end of the shift tube..
...should it be loose and wiggle? Not the bushing, but the cup itself. Mine is and I think it is contributing to my shifting issues. But before I break out the welder, is there something else I should know/consider?

There is a set screw that secures it to the linkage. It might be tough to get at but that should solve the problem.

Thought the same thing, but that set screw was very tight and the cup was still wiggling away. It seems like whatever internal mechanism that holds the cup to the tube is worn away. Any ideas what that might actually be? T

I'm heading out now but I'm sure someone will chime in with other suggestions.

Remove the tapered set screw that fixes the ball cup to the shift shaft and inspect it. It could be damaged from previous tightening despite it being "tight". Is there a drilled hole in the screw head for safety wire?

while still in the tunnel? Or did you remove it first?

One small tack weld while still in the car. Be very careful though.

I'll wedge some wet towels or welding blankets around it first.

MIG snot gets everywhere. Use a lot of towels, and make sure the metal is clean.

It now feels like I thought it might after a factory short shifter and del-rin lined shift-tube coupler were both installed. Much more positive feel. I almost need to re-learn how to shift the car. ![]()
