Unscientific look at dry vs. murky cars....

Hi,

I had an interesting time in the garage yesterday. I am dismantling a New Mexico car, at the same time I am finishing a California car. Right now I am working with the heat flapper boxes, and I just thought I should share these pictures:

The right on is from a NM car, the left one from my German/Swedish -72 S Coupé:

The only shiny part on the left one is where I cut off the bolt that holds the wire, since it was impossible to remove due to rust. The spring was gone! The right one looks almost new, only dirty. The factory coating is still clearly visible, and it works beautifully. The flap is tight and seals like new. No need to even paint it! I just have to clean it up.

This is even worse, the left one is from my German/Swedish -72 T Coupe, "repaired" beyond recognition due to rust. This one is just to throw in the trash can. The right on is from my CA -73 T Targa:

The right one looks great, only the flapper axle bushing was dried out from the heat. This one will look like new after media blasting!

So, you CA/NM/AZ guys don't know how lucky you are!

Regards,

Johan

There was a post in the Off Topic last week about a WWII P-40 found in the African desert after 70 years. Bone dry and not a hint of rust.

There is a reason the US miltiary stores all its aircraft in Arizona.

The other day I found some rust on my 86 AZ 911.

It was on the passenger window sealing strip.

It took me 5 years to find it!

Hooray for Arizona.

My AZ 89 Cab is actually sandblasted clean- the underside of the car has a consistent satin finish-

The only problem with many Western cars is unless the car is garaged the paint suffers- and you find cars on their 3rd or 4th respray.
