Question Cracked fan shroud/housing

When cleaning my engine compartment tonight I came across a 1 inch crack in the housing around my cooling fan.
Should I be concerned? Is this an easy part to replace?
Thanks,
David

i dont know how much the housing is dollar wise, but i just took the strap, housing, fan and alternator out of my '70 2.2t. it took about a half hour, pretty easy actually, make sure when you put the housing back on that the bottom rests, no movement left or right, there is a little pin that lines up with the housing on the bottom.

David,

I recently went through my 930 Turbo motor and ran into the same thing. My fan housing was cracked in two locations on the fins. I was starting to notice the fan scraping against a section of the housing.

You have a couple options:

First, leave it and pray for the best. Things could get real ugly if matters get worse. If you let it go, you may have to replace the fan, belt, housing, alternator, and possibly wiring.

Option two, have a reputable shop repair the magnesium housing. This is a pretty common practice and should be quite cost effective. The only real issue becomes the removal and installation of the housing/alternator. This is a pretty straightforward process and can be handled by most backyard mechanics.

Option three, find a good used housing for a reasonable price and install it. This is the approach I took. I found an excellent housing for roughly $100 from a member of this site. I had it media blasted then powder coated and it turned out fantastic.

Option four, walk into your local dealership… pull down your pants and prepare.

AMG- 100% correct.
My housing was cracked possibly due to PO overtightening, this can easily damage your alternator which is v expensive.
Some housings are very similar. With some minor machining I had Vertex fit a used SC housing on my Carrera.
Maybe Vertex has a used housing which can work for you?
Worth a call?
Sorry Pelican P. (but you don't do used parts anyhow)

Pelican can get you a new housing, but I can't remember how much. Currently I am working on AMG's first option. I need to get a housing and a fan, just have been working on everything else and it isn't rubbing right now.

Question

Would it make sense to powder coat, paint, or pollish the new part before I install it? It may spruce things up a bit under the hood.
