Idle Speed for an 87?
Just wondering what the idle speed should be set to for an 87 3.2...mine is around 950rpm and it seemsa tad fast to me.
|
Idle speed is controlled by the chip in the DME. Early 80's Carreras had the idle set at 800. Some time in the 87 model year the idle speed was changed to 880. To get a speed faster then that you would need air coming from something other then the butterfly. There may be a vacuum leak or a problem with the idle air control valve.

I have a Steve Wong chip...Kevin at KMW said 950 is normal for that chip...just wondering.

My 87 idles in the 950 range and I think its great. Much better than when the return springs and pivots weren't pulling it home and it was 1200 + all over the place.

If vacuum leaks are not your issue, maybe the idle microswitch has failed behind the throttlebody.
The switch retards the timing to 5 degrees at idle and jumps the timing to 20 I believe once it deactivates. |
