Ebay bid

Okay, no doubt some of you have seen it, lots of us lurk on eBay - what do you think? I did a one-shot max. - if I get it, it's the deal of the century, if I don't, I've saved a chunk of money for next time and get to enjoy my SC a while longer. And yep, painting it would be one of my first projects - Tangerine isn't my color :-)

If it's the '67 you're talking about, it looks nice. But all kinds of info is missing. If I were serious about that car, there would be 101 questions I'd need answered.

If you get it, you can't paint it. Orange speaks so loudly "EARLY 911!"

I've seen the future, and the future is "Irish Green." What questions would you ask? I asked all the usual, as well as pics of the interior and chassis - anything specific to the early S that newbies might miss?

Something tells me that whether or not it's for real, you're going to be outbid by Ebay trogs anyway.

Nice looking car, though.

Probably - there's a '71 911S that's over $15,000 and still hasn't hit it's reserve. For that kind of dough, I wouldn't use eBay though. With the way early car prices are going, especially the Esses, I was shocked when my bid met the reserve! It'd be nice to have the first year S, but I'd still be cool if I track down a nice '66.

Hey Emanuel,

So what do you think about the seller's current warning that the car is insured for $17k and that he has "been getting some serious offers on the phone" ?

Hard to tell much from the small pics posted...is he advertising the through the grill fogs as factory? Most '67 fogs were the in the bumper kind...But yes...'67 was a great year, the first for the true "S". Here's a link to a site full of early car info: http://www.early911s.com/

I call those guys "deadbeat sellers," and I retracted my bid when I saw that. I'm not a fan of eBay auctions that aren't real auctions, where the high bidder will win after the reserve is met. The way things stood, if no one else turned up in the next week, he'd have had to sell to me for nine grand; I think he got nervous about that possibility (which was pretty slim in my opinion). But why bid in good faith if he's not auctioning the car in good faith?

If he wanted a quicker sale, he could have held a shorter term auction.

If he wanted higher initial offers, he could have used a higher reserve.

If he'd rather field offers over the phone, he should have taken out a classified ad somewhere.

He's essentially just using eBay to advertise, knowing they have a large audience, and admitting he'll void the auction agreement with the bidders, and skip paying eBay their fees, even though he'll make the sale because of their service. Not someone I'd be comfortable buying a 35-year old used car from, sight unseen and long distance.

I'm sure he'd argue that I could call him up and make an offer, but with the auction I'd know what I was up against. Over the phone, he's welcome to say Seinfeld called and offered him 60 thou; on eBay, I'd know who made the offer and how serious they might be judging from their feedback rating and such. I've had some good chats with other bidders in eBay auctions, the same as at some real auctions, doing a bit of trash-talking and going over the merits and flaws of the item; sometimes the other guy catches things you'd miss (like the foglights), sometimes you'll note something he didn't catch (like, regarding another eBay auction, the fact that there wasn't a targa in '66).

Hell, he could just be one of those guys (call him "citatson") that always say they're thinking of selling when they never really intend to, they just get off on hearing how much other people would give them. Classic car world is full of them, guys with cherry 1-owner Corvettes and Mustangs do it all the time.

An interesting move.

When I emailed the seller the usual questions, including "is there rust anywhere on the car," I got the following response:

"The rust is basically rust free as a car of this age can be. "

He seems a bit slippery to me. It will be interesting to see where this one goes.

Oh, the 71S is currently at $19k. Too rich for my blood, for a car with a non-original interior.

Best,
PI

The 67S

is now on the Early S board. Seller wants $15k. Quite a step up from the $9k reserve on Ebay.

He seems all over the place, and desperate to sell. He keeps posting messages encouraging people to bid higher. He really gives the impression of not knowing exactly what he's doing.

Odd...
I remember last year there was an auction on eBay for a running, driving pre '69 tangerine orange 911S in Calgary and it included a green parts car as well. I think that the auction went up to $5,000-$5,500 US. I'm pretty sure that the car was described as a runner but needing work/restoration.

I was interested, as it seemed that you could make a fairly decent car and have some parts left over - Unfortunately I had no garage space for another project. I'm not sure if this is the same car, but it seems possible.
