If you only do limited miles, and the car is old enough, look into classic insurance.
I am just changing over to classic insurance available here (in NZ, I assume Australia is the same - you own all our insurance companies anyway). If I restrict to 5000km per annum, no under 25yo drivers, semi secure storage, I get NZ$350pa (about US$150) for NZ$50k cover. I don't wanna know what unlimited km and drivers are.

Vic, try Just Car Insurance. They are a AAMI Subsidiary that only deal with exotic and modified cars. I'm paying nearly the same as you and mine has been extensively modified over factory specs. The difference in premium between my stock setup and now is around $148 p.a!!!

G'day Vic
I'm with that mob, for my TR4. I got tail ended coming off the F1 AGP Show 'n Shine convoy. Minimal boot damage. Shannon's brag about allowing *you* to choose the repairer. Naturally, I took it to the Healey Factory. 7 weeks later I get a call to inspect the repairs and take her home. I could have done a better job myself! Bloody woeful. I contacted Shannon's to tell 'em not to pay the buggers. Before I could say another word this motor mouthed juvenile on the other end yells "but Sir, YOU chose the repairer! YOU consented to the nature of repairs!" as if to shift responsibility to back onto *me* - their client! Fair dinkum, he was left in no doubt that he'd (Shannon's) picked the *wrong* person to serve up that attitude! ![]() As for AAMI, I've been with them for 20 odd years and had a few bingles, some my doing, some not. I've never ever had a problem with AAMI. Couldn't speak more highly of them. ![]() The Porsche is with them -Shannon's couldn't compete with the premium and wouldn't agree with the value. Pretty much ditto as Adams coupe, except the agreed value is 42K (but they wanted to sight the car before agreeing to that) @ 1.4K premium. How many weeks now is it since the F1 AGP? I still haven't got my TR back

Hi Sean,
I have to admit, Shannons are a bit strange. When I first purchased the car, I called them for a quote and they gave me a figure of about $4,700 (!) Guess what, one phone call to a dealer who has a "mate" there and the quote mysteriously dropped to $1,400 or so. Wish I could nominate my margins like that. Cheers, VC |

G'day Victor
You've probably got a "overtaking on blind corners" margin built into your policy! From memory I'm paying about $900pa, also through Shannons. With due respect to others who've had issues with them, in 12 years I've yet to have a problem with a claim. Having said that I'll be following Merv's suggestion when its renewal time. By the way, anyone up for another drive soon? Cheers

Paul,
I'm up for another drive! We were talking in a recent thread about maybe meeting up one night for some beers and to plot our next journey. Does anyone have any suggestions for a venue? It's gotta be central to most of us, or people just won't come along... If we can agree on a venue, I'll post a new topic, and email all the people who responded to the Original Drive Day in Feb (not everyone who responded was able to attend). Victor, if it makes you feel more comfortable, we'll leave the Liberace/Photoshop bit out!

Adam,
I'll meet anytime, any place dude. Afterall, it is a drive day, so the longer the drive, the better ![]() I just have to sort out a darn intermittent ignition issue and then I'll be all set. What about a cruise to Sorrento and then catch a Ferry across to Redcliffe (?) and come back via Geelong way?

I feel like a fool.
1985 944 na (sorry about not being a 911) No mods 26-year-old driver/financed/garaged at home No previous claims 60% no claim Comprehesive insurance Sum insured: $20,000 Lane Cove, Sydney, NSW About 20,000 kms per year This should be cheap you would think. I was 25 when I applied for this. I had quotes around the $2500 to $3500 mark at first and almost didn't buy the car because of these high quotes then got a quote for $1800 from NRMA. That is just doable I thought. I asked some people, and then my mechanic. I got told to ask Shannon's, Just Cars, AAMI and another exotic car place. I can't remember which one, but one of them quoted $5000 for a 163HP 944. I ended up going with NRMA for the quoted price, as nothing else was within $700 of their premium. What am I doing wrong to get these high premiums? How come a car worth $70,000 with 40HP more is cheaper than my $20,000 (if that) car? My first renewal is just around the corner, so I need advice on how to approach this or who to talk to. Thanks, Sam. |

Sam,
From what I understand about the insurance game, it has nothing to do with the amount of HP and little to do with your age even though they make a big song and dance about that. What it comes down to is statistics. Your type of car is probably classified as a higher risk because there may have been a lot of claims for that model in the recent past. I have a 1994 Holden Calais insured for $14,000 that is costing me about $850 a year to insure because (apparently) they knocked off by kids who drive commodores who want the Calais parts. This illustrates the point that the premium is in no way tied to the sum insured. It's a crazy business. Cheers, VC '89 3.2 |

I agree partly with what your saying, but hang on.
If a thief saw a 944 and a 911 side by side, they would clearly choose the 911. In fact I would expect to pay a very high insurance premium for a 911, and a lower one for a 944. I think I got screwed because I didn't haggle or something. The places I rang gave me a quote, which will always be the absolute highest street price. I just need to get inside the loop. I'm going to try an insurance broker that advertises in the Porsche club mag. Hopefully they can sort something out for me. Sam. |

OK, after a discussion with an insurance broker he said my insurance was actually pretty good. Go figure.
He said only when you start using the car as a second car do you get the massive discounts. The limit for that is 8000 km per year, $900 less for the premium. Well I was going to use the car as a second car when I first bought it, but I never ended up driving the other car, because I always wanted to be in the Porsche. So I guess I'll never get the massive discounts, unless I move closer to work. Sam. |
