Transmission Breather Holes on Off-Road 911s
I am curious how Porsche and others who have made rallye versions of 911s have solved the problem of dirt getting into the breather on the tranny?
Once dirt gets in there, it goes right into the gears & etc. - same when you do a water crossing. What did P AG do on the SC/RS? Others? |

Perhaps routed it up to high point and utilized a better filter ala jeepers?

Maybe a filter on the end of an extended breather hose?

webbster, any /all off roaders in the KNOW..................ALWAYS RUN A RUBBER HOSE AS HIGH AS THEY CAN GET IT!
dont matter if its a dirty bike/jeep/truck/buggy/rally anything. we on our SCORE CLASS 8 chev truck run them up onto the cage. hose clamp hose to tranny diffys fuel cell etc and then run as high as possible. install the "DREADED" LMFAO K&N filter(look at catalog for correct size nipple for yer hose) and then........................get this............................ take a freeking beer can /red bull can/whatever can fits yer filter and dab some RTV SNOT on inside of can(after cutting can) and place on TOP of filter and now ya gots a lil cover for it against rain/dirt clods/cow-horse-deer-donkey guts/dust. real simple. when ya gots all yer diffys/engine/tranny/fuel cell breathers up.................fording water crossings is a mere flesh wound. on dirty bikes just zip ty off engine case filter to handlebars if yer anticipating crossing deep water.

Yes, the above is what I would do too.
Now, anybody know what Porsche actually did? Or the rallye teams? |

Such an inconsequential detail would entail knowing a team mechanic.
Here is, perhaps, what you need to know. When a hot engine/trans hits cold water all vent lines start to pull a vacuum based on rapid temperature change. Hence the need for high mounting regardless of how someone actually accomplished it. It probably varied from car to car as to where and how it was routed.
