Cabriolet top seal replacement

I'm looking to replace the top seals that go around the window on my '87 Cabriolet. How do I unfasten the two seals that seat along the top edge of the side window glass? Also, is it necessary/recommended to also replace the rear seals along the back edge of the glass at the same time in order to have a good seal with the new top seals?

I am not sure I understand which seals.
Can you post a pic of the area? I have my top half way apart so I can look when I get home...

#94 are over $150 a piece.

If it only because they are fading and peeling, I refurbished both of mine for less than $10 by peeling the canvass off and gluing new one on them.

I need to replace/refurbish 89 and maybe 94. The fabric on #89 is shredded in some areas and faded from black to light grey. I used a magic marker on the #94 seal which was only faded and it looks OK for now.

I think I will need to remove the seals to recover them. Maybe JJ 911SC will give us a tutorial.

My 94s are faded but otherwise look ok. I would be interested in refinishing them. The 88/89s do need to be replaced. They are shaffed and tearing apart in spots. How do I go about pulling them off?

With the top up and the window down, sitting in the back seat, there is 3 nuts to remove (the seal has 3 stud in them).

OK, refurbishing them is very easy (was one of my first fix) and cheap.

See my posts 3 & 5 of WTB: Cabriolet window seals

I did do a write up and PM it to a few guys, I'll look for it and post it here.

Got the canvas from as awning shop, match the top perfectly.

Ok...

I was going to get new ones until I saw the prize

I got the canvas locally, you need about 15" by 24" max. to do both but get a yard and you'll be set for other projects.

With the windows down and top up, remove the "seal" by undoing the 3 nuts from the top side frame while sitting in the back seat. The studs are embedded in the seal.

Once out, slowly peel out from the back and use the old skin as a template to cut the new canvas.

Spray both the canvas and the rubber with 3M70 or 3M90 adhesive as per the instructions (2 or 3 coats) both are available a Lowes for about $10.

When ready to assemble, leave the canvas (glue side up) on a flat surface and apply the pointy end of the rubber (side that would touch the window) to the middle of your canvas template and pressing firmly, roll it to one side than the other side. This is easier then trying to apply the canvas to the rubber. Fold the canvas to the back of the seal (stud side), trim as required and you are done.

Put in place and screw the nuts back hand tight, open the door, roll the window up and close the door. You should have some sideway play to positioned the seal as desired then tight the 3 nuts. I had to elongated the bottom hole sideway with a drill to get an even seal.

The car also had the plastic window slach when I got it. Someone wanted $300 to replace it. Well, with the same canvas a some sticky Velcro, my wife did me some strip and voilas, my top now has rear quater windows for less them $10

Have Fun

JJ
