Rear Shelf
This message is for member Fred/Li: You responded to me regarding using tempered masonite for rear shelf. Can you give me more information? How did you form the masonite? Did you use one piece or two pieces like the original shelf? I have cut the upper piece for the speakers and having trouble making the bend.
Thanks ------------------ |

I recently re did my interior in my 71 targa, I used the old shelf as a template and did it in three peices to make the bend. The middle peice being about 1" wide and connected it all with duct tape. Sounds funny but it came out perfect.
Good luck David |

When I did my rear deck lid, I used 22 gauge sheetmetal. I removed the old frame, bent the sheetmetal over it to make it form the same as the existing, trimmed it and covered it with leather. It came out great. No problems.

Hey guys anyone live near an upholstery shop, they should sell the press board that is used under the cover material. I have had some thing's redone and the guy I used seemed to have that stuff in stock. Orginal Fit sells it (I think)

My '69 had a two piece that I used as a form.
For the hinge, I epoxied a strip of canvas on to the edges to give me a flex point. This was a car with no rear speakers so the panel laid flat on the window platform. Newer cars have foam rubber bumpers underneath to allow for speaker clearance. I'd prefer the tempered masonite as it won't be as likely to retain moisture as the standard fiber board might...in case there's any rear window leak. I bought a piece of replacement naugahyde type material to cover the unit. I stretched and glued it to the underside and it worked well. If your covering isn't shot, then maybe you can reuse it. Have fun. |

Anybody know if the piece of sheetmetal at the top of the shelf is still available? This is for a 71 Targa. It's either Part Nr. 901.555.096.40 or 901.555.096.42. Mine's warped. I might be able to straighten it, but a new one would be better. Thanks. -- Curt
