Car Is Dead....please help

Today I wa sout driving. I accelerated from 2nd to 3rd and CRUNCH! I stopped at the side of the road with the engine running fine. Now when I put it in gear and try to accelerate all I get is a crunching noise. No pull at all. The clutch pedal just feels as before as does the shifter. I have no idea where to start looking. I've got a horrible feeling this is going to cost £££/$$$.

Any help would be outstanding.
Must be because I was talking of replacing it!

Afraid it sounds like money to me as well. If it were me? A flat tow to the best transmission man I know of. No way to know for sure until the transaxle is opened up, but by the sound? I'm guessing ring & pinion. A silver lining? If you don't already have limited slip, now may be the time to think about it. Sorry to hear the news, but heck..."only" mechanicals. They can be fixed...

Chris, Scotland may have different terms? By flat tow, I mean a tow rig that actually placed your car atop a flat bed truck. You don't want to tow the car rolling on it's drive wheels...that could damage any of the transmission's salvagable bits, if there are any...

Is the clutch cable definitely OK? Could be snapped even though it feels normal. Otherwise linkage? Get it, as Paul says, picked up on the back of a recovery truck as oppossed to just lifting the front end to your Porsche mechanic of choice. Really might be just a linkage, or clutch cable.
Good luck....

Chris,

I concur with Paul that a truck ride is in order. However, it may not be that costly if only the guide fork on that lower inspection plate has come loose.

In the diagram below, #6 is the guide fork, and they sometimes come loose when one or more of the #8 M8 nuts come loose from the three studs on plate #5.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's times like this you realize just how great this board is. Unfortunately the car had already been towed home by the time I typed this thread up. I hope I've not made matters worse. Stupid person of the year award to me if I have.
I've got tomorrow off so I'' check out all your suggestions then. I'm feeiling a bit too down beat to try anything tonight.
Once again thanks everybody!

Could be as simple as a loose / broken CV joint / axle

Isn't it great? Only this board can turn a broken CV joint into good news! Seriously, happy to hear it wasn't worse. Remember the flat bed tip for next time. It's always the safest tow.

Glad to hear that the problem was the CVs
The correct quess was due to a similar problem with my car.
Even a blind squirell can find a nut.

Rob,
Just to let you know (and any other Scottish guys lurking around here), the work was carried out by George Morrison Motors in Rutherglen. I dont know if you service your own car or get it done locally, but this guy is friendly and seems to know his stuff. There aren't enough good Porsche guys in Scotland.
