911 Model Timeline

Being still very new to 911 ownership, I continue to struggle with 911speak. I need a visual aid to understand what models came out when, etc. A few quick Pelican and Google searches failed to produce a graphical timeline of the model evolution of the 911 so I whipped this together using Wayne's book. I'd love some feedback/corrections/additions.

Here's my second attempt to post it as a link. It's a .jpg I'm hosting on my website so hopefully you can save link as...yadayadaya.

On a Mac, it's simple enough just to Command, + and zoom in on the link in safari. The resolution is there, your browser's just going to default to trying to make it fit the screen (probably because of my web publishing incompetence, naturally).

As your feedback comes in, I'll do my best to keep it updated when able and hopefully in due time we can post a clean/accurate version somewhere within Pelicanland for all to reference.

Good picture! Can you link to a website where the original came from? Here the downloading automatically reduces any pictures to 800 pixels wide.

See, Joe Bob, I'm already referencing my 'handy' model timeline to determine that your "Raggedyass 83cab" has been re-engined from a 2.7 to a 3.6 (most likely from a 993). Tee hee. It's all starting to make more sense to me.

This is fantastic, great work.

I was hoping one day to build a timeline for the 911 that gets very detailed. I built this for the 190SLGroup.com. It took quite a while but it is a wonderful resource. This would be more important for the 2.7s as there were so many more changes across the model. This shows changes over time for the model based on chassis number. There are detailed shots of each change highlighting the exact change. Is this possible for the 911? Where could I get that information?

190SL Group - Technical Timeline

the vin of my 1977 says it is a 911s, that's not what your timeline says.

"Timeline" need some tuning... 83 Cab (1st Porsche cab since the 356B) was fitted with a 3l.

PCA members can get this for less then $5

2.7L/911S ended w/ MY 77. MY 1978 introduced the SC w/ 3.0L engine. (US and Canada)

Slasher - that was the first thing I was expecting - why not start in '64. My question is this: (and remember, guys, I'm pretty damned new here) - were the first 911's (built in 1964) released to the U.S. as '65's?

Which brings up the second point. This timeline is entirely U.S. market focused (hence why I guessed incorrectly at Joe Bob's gray market mystery engine).

But yeah, I think this is going to have to "grow" a bit to include some variances that happened along the way. Paul's 190 tree is incredible - as is the content contained within the PCA book. I haven't even looked into PCA yet - looks like I'd better if I want to dust-up the timeline accurately.

Paul K - love the morph .gif animation. Sweet. Would be nice to have every year represented in there (lotsa work tho) - like '68 with reflector on front quarter and '72 with the oil filler door. Would be nice to be able to manually slide your mouse through the timeline to see a profile of each year (coupe?). Maybe Magnus could cycle his collection in front of a black seamless and fixed camera. Wow, how cool would that be? There should be an app for that. Sorry, I digress...

Damn, I just totally missed the '78-'83 3.0. Good catch. Also explains szyzygy's comment. I'll start tweaking the timeline some tomorrow. Repost then.

Thanks all!

- Rich

Nothing new here...

I use to teach electronic and 90% of the student would not know if a diode was forward bias or not as I drew a circuit on the board but would start screaming if I misspelled a word

The non 3 liter sure draw attention.

Do you have a copy of the Red Book?

Also, if you are not a PCA member, shoot me a PM and I'll get you a copy of the Porsche Family Tree.

And lastly, don't star a war with JB

I'm not that thin skinned....I DO have a sense of humor. But it's low brow and is beneath most of the high end crowd here......

Should have seen my avatars back in the early days. I had the Mormon Tabernacle Choir picketing my house.
