How do you adjust the idle down on '82 911SC
 

I live in Whitefish, MT. miles from my mechanic. Just took the car for the first drive after winter. How do I adjust the idle speed down...'82 911SC? Many thanks.

The idle air-bypass is located on the throttle body. It is a large slotted screw. Turn it whichever way works to lower the idle. Spec is 900 RPM at normal operating temp.

Wayne has given you the answer--turn the screw clockwise to decrease rpm--if your system has no faults. It's quite possible that the high rpm is due to a vacuum/air leak from a stuck component or a hole/crack in a rubber hose. Try the adjustment screw first, and if you cannot get the idle to respond, post your results here. We assume the problem is happening after the car is completely warmed up, correct?

I would drive the old gas out of the tank before making changes to the fuel system. Once the old gas is run out and replaced with new you may see the problem disappear. I had a similar experience this spring after the long cold winter. The problem corrected itself with several hundred miles of driving.

I would tap on you aar valve first. Make sure its not stuck open.

IF the air bypass screw doesn't help then there might be some air leaks or stuck valves, try the air bypass first. then drive the heck out of it.

if the car idled fine before winter, and now it does not, i would find out what the real problem is. adjusting the idle might not be a fix

So a little off topic but I live in Mt near Anaconda and have a 82 SC. No big issues but as you know there are not many Porsche mechanics (that I would trust) in Montana. Coming up on needing a valve adjust and really don't want to do it in my driveway. Any tips on trusted Porsche mechanics in Montana? I know there is a good shop over in hayden Lake but I was hoping for closer.

Do it in your driveway, its not hard, somthing you need to learn anyway. lots of threads on how to do it. I dont recomend the backside method. Shop is gonna charge big bucks. "Hey Leroy, we got us a porsh in here, our hr. rate just went up!" I would get the red rubber gaskets first, those things last forever.

I actually have a good German mechanic...only works on German cars. He's located in the valley outside Kalispell. He did my 2.7 conversion on my '76 Targa to the '82 SC 3.0 enginve...a beautiful job, meticulous. Let me know if you need contact info...albeit a bit far from Anaconda. Good luck.
