I'll power coat your door handles...

Hey all:

I recently purchased a power coating system and redid my door handles (much cheaper than buy new handles, and much more durable than spray paint).

Now, I am extending an offer to you. Send me your handles, minus the lock cylinders, and I will refinish them in black for $75. That includes media blasting and power coating.

I'll even offer a 1 year warranty...and quick turnaround.

If interested, please email me:
mailto:lilmonkey@monkeyskin.com

I can also take some pictures if you would like to see the quality...then all you need is to order up new seals from Pelican and your handles will look brand new!

You may want to reconsider your pricing.
For example, my local powdercoater (who is great, has a lot of corporate clients, like GT Bicycles, coats the frames) would do 2 door handles for around $25.

I saw one of those little powder coating machines for like $100 at Harbor freight Tools. I'm thinking about buying one for myself, so I can powder coat all my parts.

How much is the powder for those machines?

No desrespect, Eric, but if you're going to go into the Powdercoating business, you might want to refer to it correctly instead of calling it Power coating.

"Power coating" won't pass muster with the concours judges. It's far too thick a finish. Which begs the question: Just what did the Factory use to do the black metal trim?
Was it a paint, or something electro-plated on to the metal? Whatever they used, it's very durable stuff.

Has this forum gone commercial? It's bad enough to be subjected to advertising at the movies, now here also? This is blatant abuse of this site . Go away.

BTW this is different from a member offering something from his car or garage!!!!!!!!!!!

Doug brings up a good point, I've always wondered how the factory applies paint or coatings to metal, there must be some sort of electrical or chemical process involved as you almost never see a primer coat. Engine sheet metal is a good example. No primer but excellent adhesion. Is this some sort of electro-chemical process? Obviously dealing with new, fresh metal surfaces makes paint adhesion easier but I suspect another process involved....

I believe the door handles on 911's are black annodized like the other trim. Later door handles like on 993 are painted body color.

Engine sheet metal is probably powder coated.

That's what I thought, Orb. The black parts on my 20 year old car are still like new. It couldn't be paint.

Sure, but the question still remains:
How do we refinish our door handles? Mine are looking rather grey. Also, any suggestions on refinishing lugnuts?

I re-finished the black handles on the 320i with flat black Rustoleum. They have been "newly painted" for about 8 yrs.Painted them while still on the car, just taped off everything in sight with old sheets and Blue masking tape, no worries.

Door handles can be disassembled, blasted, finished, and sent off for re-anodize.

Refinishing lugs is probably to much of a PITA; new ones aren't too bad. Or, you can carefully refinish each (of 20) lug and send it off for re-anodize also.

If others on the board know of reasonable shops that do anodize/chrome/chromate work, I'm drawing closer to the day when I will have a bundle of trim and parts to send off. Any info would be quite useful.

Hello

The factory door handles are chromed.

Black chroming uses oxided silver.

This is more expensive then doing the high luster chrome. Porsche also did black chrome the headlightrings untill the mid 80´s when a worker calculatet to save 2$ per lamp by just nicle plating.

I have a good powder coater on hand and this guy does powder coat race bikes.
OK, he makes prices for friends but for 75$ he heavy duty powders the complete engine sheet or all axle parts. And he stocks over 5000 colors and his stuff is done perfect. This is the reason he get payed those prices and he shipes worldwide ( Well Nokia is one of his main costumers he powder coats GSM handys for them ).
Well we tried some 10 years ago to powder coat the door handles to match the body color but Porsche liked the paintet finish better. ( OK the metallic colors didn´t matched perfect )
Try to coat a race bike with less then 5 grams and you are in the buisness

Grüsse
