Shimming the oil pressure relief spring, HELP,,
Hi,
The oil pressure on my 911 SC is very low ![]() So I read in the "how to rebuild" that one possible source could be that there is something wrong with the oil pressure spring. I am about to change them and the book says something about shimming the vertical pressure spring with 6mm washers. So for the question. Where should I put the washers?? Inside the piston? Inside the pressure relief cap? Slide them on the pressure relief sleeve? ![]() ![]() And the washer, is the 6mm the hole size on the washer or the washer itself? Hope someone can help me with some good advice ![]() If someone have a picture of the process that wold be PERFECT ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Shimming a compression spring increases the force. Typically, if one end of the spring is pushing on the poppet and the other end is pushing on the body the shim can go between the body and the spring. I'll see if I can dig up a cross-section image.

Thank God for scanners!
Place the shim in the cap 31. The spring 34 will hold it in place. ![]()

Regarding my low oil pressure.
When the engine is cold I have a nice oil pressure. The pressure rises 1 bar pr 1000rpm. So on an cold engine e everything is in working order ![]() But when the engine is at working temperature the pressure drops ![]() Then I have less then 1 bar at idle en the pressure is no longer "linear" to the revs. I hav about 1,5 bar at 3000rpm at hot engine. I run the engine on a thick 20W50 oil. The engine do not make any strange noises or use any oil. There is some blue smoke at startup on cold engine, but this is only until the up/down revving at startup stops and it settles at idle. Other Porsche owners have tried this car and say that it is "fast" for a SC. I have been informed that there are 946 cams on the engine. There has also been an aftermarket upgrade to front oil cooler. So that is the sad story of my 1980 SC |
