1991 C2 (964 body) steering leak.. help
My friend just got his 91 C2 running again. There is 33,000 miles on the car. It has been sitting since 2008. We did all the necessary things to get the car back up and running and it's fine.
The issue is that there seems to be something leaking near the rack and pinion steering area. There is a plastic cover in the front (I'm use to the older body styles so I'm use to seeing everything) covering this area. I have a few questions... - Is there a reservoir for this car for the fluid... is it even power steering? - Is there anything that is prone to leak on these cars? If so, what could it be and is it an easy fix? - The leaks seems to be coming from the drivers side edge of the plastic cover and it was when we were jacking the car back down after getting it running I noticed the fluid leaking as the passenger side was higher.. - Any good tech articles on this fix or the rack and pinion? Thanks for the help in advance. Bryan

Yes the steering racks leak on these cars. Griffiths, the A/C guy also rebuilds these racks. Give him a call. I am sure there are others.

Thx
Ok, just spoke to my friend... There seems to be a reservoir in the back of the car in the engine bay for the power steering fluid.. It is empty.
-Does this car share the power steering fluid with the clutch like it did on my 996? -Is there another reservoir in the vehicle for the power steering or is the one in the back the only one? -How difficult is it to remove the rack and pinion on the a two-wheel drive car? -Any advice on what to do now? Should I just fill the reservoir and see what happens hoping the leak was a small one that has gotten worse by sitting and will seal itself up? Thanks, Bryan

It can't leak if it is empty, the leak was at your rack.

Apparantly, my questions are being asked wrong by me.... The reservoir in the back is empty and no leaks around that area since it is at the rear of the car... Is there a reservoir in the front? Is the fluid shared with the clutch accumulator like the newer 996's were? These are the questions I'm looking to be answered. Other than a couple random comments above I haven't gotten any closer to the answers I need.
Can anyone help me with these questions specifically? Thx, Bryan

no reservoir at front for steering.
This takes atf fluid. Clutch uses brake fluid. Your leak is at the front on the rack.

Perfect. thanks for the help. I will pull the panel, inspect the rack and then either remove and/or replace what seals are needed to fix the leak. Then add ATF when secured. Appreciate the help.

Last question, any typical seals which leak so I know what to expect? Car has been sitting for 5 years so don't know what it was like when he stopped driving. Only 33,000 miles.

If you're able, you can reseal yourself. These guys sell a kit, though I believe I've read it may be less expensive direct from ZF.

How difficult is it to remove this rack and is there a technical article on this subject? I will look in the general technical forum as well to see.
Thanks for all the help, Bryan
