73T 915 5th gear

My 73T with 120k miles recently stopped engaging 5th gear. I was just cruising. I have owned her for over 30 Years. I would appreciate advice on what to trouble shoot and other advice. I live in SE NC, is there a good repair shop in this area?

Welcome to Pelican!

Does the gear grind or you just can't find 5th?

I would first check ALL of the bushings in the shifter and linkage. The coupler behind the rear seats should be checked for excessive wear and adjustment. These can all be done by the DIY'er if you are inclined. You don't even need any special tools. Just a basic set of metric sockets/wrenches and socket head (allen) wrenches. There are tons of threads here you can use for reference.

At a very similar mileage I had the same problems with 5th gear. I do all my own engine and suspension work, but knew nothing about the internals of the 915. I had adjusted all the shifter and linkage properly, and replaced all the bushings, but it had no effect. I trusted my local mechanic when he told me it needed to be replaced. It worked fine afterwards.

If you also can't get it into reverse it is probably a coupler issue. May need adjustment or bushings replace. Are you close to Wilmington? The shop I use for my work will give you a good diagnosis. Although he usually sends out tranny's for rebuild if that is the problem.

Thanks for the replies.

There is no grinding.

I can get into 5th from reverse while stopped.

I hope this helps with your analysis.

I live in Hampstead,NC, which shop do you recommend?

Which tranny shop if I must ship out for repair?

Thanks again for your help.
