That looks a lot like the horn relay in my '66 911. It was also located up front near the battery. The horn wiring connected to the two terminals connected in the middle. As another poster replied, the flasher relay (in my car) was beside the fuse board near the steering linkage cover. It should be a aluminum can sitting upright in a holder. Mine was a three prong relay and just replaced it with a Tridon EL13 relay with no problems. Regards, |
Rick, thanks for the correction. I was indeed fiddling endlessley with the horn relay. So after a good open-palmed smack to the forehead I will be testing the voltage at the *right* relay.

That's the horn relay for sure, you can tell because it says 30/51. Matches the diagram exactly.

That did it. Replaced the cylindrical relay perked the blinkers right up. But I just noticed the hazards have stopped working. Next project!

i am currently re drawing the wiring diagram that we all have, you know the fuzzy one, and the goal will be to release it as a PDF that will be able to segregate specific circuits. i will have to add this to it.

Here's is another solution which works. My 68 had the same issues with turn signals and hazard flashers not working correctly. Turns signals flashed normally on the left and crazy fast on the right. Hazards not at all.
I first cleaned all the grounds and bulb holders. PO had the right front incorrectly connected to the 2w marker bulb. Then I replaced the turn signal flasher in the trunk near the fusebox with a Tridon EL13 available at any auto parts outlet for about $5 (photo 1). Turns signals now worked perfectly but no joy on hazards. Read this thread and a couple of similar ones and I studied the wiring diagrams. On my car pulling the hazard switch results in a click near the pedals and nothing else. If the turn signals were activated pulling the hazard switch stopped the turn signals. A-ha...The relay seemed to be functioning but the hazard flasher did not. As noted previously the hazard flasher 90161534110 is unique in that it has isolated left and right circuits and is NLA (photo 2). Checked Pelican, ********, Part Obsolete and everywhere else. No joy on the correct flasher. One of the places told me they had a nice one out of a clean 68 that had just come in so I took a chance. Again, no luck and the flasher I received turned out be incorrect. I was talking to a friend who collects vintage VWs and he told me he had similar problem with his 67 Beetle. Looked at his car and someone installed the wrong flasher incorrectly which caused fuse to blow if turn signals and flasher activated same time. His VW and my Porsche's shared heritage was clearly evident however so I did some research and found this Wolfsburg West flasher Part number 211953227BWW for 67-68 Bug and Bus flashers (photo 3). This part is a combination flasher relay but it has terminals marked 30, S, vR, and vL. Could this be the fix? Will it work if I only connect the four wires on my original Porsche flasher can? OOS at WW but available at several other bug retailers. Cost me $59. I connected wires as follows 30 - Green/White (Power) S - White/Red (Switch Ground) R - Black/Green (Right Side Turn Signal Load) L - Black/Grey (Left Side Turn Signal Load) The flasher came with some double spades and jumpers which I didn't use. Tested it and works perfectly. The little red light in the hazard switch even flashes. Yup - I know its a bit more costly than the other fix but does give a clean look (susequent photos). I used an angle bracket from Lowes so I could attach the relay centered and in the hole for the clip on the top of the Stribel GMBH can. I'm posting this as an alternative that works well. Most early car owners I've met tell me their flashers quit working years ago and they are frustrated looking for fixes. No, that relay is designed to be integrated into the turn signal circuit. See how it has both left and right triggers?

Hello,
I‘m new to the classic car hobby, purchased a partially restored 912 and working my way through issues. Hazard light only blinking on one side- I assumed it was an issue with the warning signal flasher and purchased a WW flasher 211953227B. Wired up as suggested in the forum but no joy. Unfortunately I took apart the original flasher relay and think I botched it. Wondering now if the root cause is the Warning signal relay. I have power on the warning signal flasher 30 terminal, when I pull out the hazard warning switch the terminal S goes to ground and I hear a Click in the warning signal relay but nothing else happens. No switching takes place. Can anyone you suggest a check procedure which would help me locate the fault ? Thanks, Paul |
A quick update - got the WW flasher 211953227B working as described in the thread - on my particular flasher the case needed to be attached to neg earth, during initial testing the case was not attached to the vehicle and consequently didn't work. The material here is wonderful. Thanks
