Strut insert removal 930 fenders

Can the strut insert be removed from the strut without removing the strut from the car with 930 front fenders? If so, how? It looks like the strut will not have enough clearance to pull it out from the fender. I unhooked the clip for the brake line but it still doesn't seem to be enough clearance. Also, when I removed the dust cap I found there was no rubber bumper or washer under it. Is this an issue? My new Sachs inserts did not come with this rubber bumper or washer.

Yes it can...Cut loose the top nut, and jack up the car on a jack point that will allow the suspension to fully extend. Now, tape some rags on the top of the strut and compress the strut by hand and pull out from under the fender. The rags help to protect your paint should you slip off the strut while compressed...
I actually use an old towel folded a few times across the top of the strut, using the two ends of the towel as my grab points for compressing the strut, pulling the strut from under the wheel-well, once I had compressed the strut sufficiently to clear the fender.

I tried that and there isn't clearance to get the strut out. I tried turning the wheels each way and it didn't seem to make a difference. Also, is there supposed to be a rubber bumper and washer on top of the strut as in the Bentley manual?

I did this repair yesterday. There is plenty of room, the hard part is compressing the strut to clear the fender. Removing was easy as the old struts were totalled. Installing new Bilstien HD required some effort to compress far enough to clear. I left out the rubber bumber for now, may have to ga back and put it in later!
Good luck.

I did do it on my 930 fenders but had th remove the caliper from the hub to get enough angle to get the strut outside the fender.

Ruflife,
That is exactly what I was thinking I'd have to do as I can't enough angle either to get it out.

...as I recall, I had the calipers off the vehicle, as I was doing a caliper rebuild while changing out old worn struts and shocks with Bilstien sports.
While I was in there; ball joints, new brake lines, turbo tie rods...the slope steepens
