replacement front windshield info needed
 

I cracked my front windshield right down the middle trying to press it out to reset the seal. Can anyone tell me what years will fit as direct replacements? A source for a used one would be helpful as well.

Well, basically, I got it installed (with trim) and noticed that the bottom outside lip got folded under so it wasn't lapping over the bottom frame. I tried to get it to roll out but with the window in place it was too tight and I needed to start over. I read with gentle pressure the windshield could be pressed out from the inside and in fact I had to do so a couple of times during the install when a section was missed. This time my luck ran out with the whole seal set in place.

If you have the original seal please replace it - our host has them. I had mine replaced about one year ago with new seals front and rear. I afforded new trim ($$$) and it looks great! A local guy did the windshield with an after-market piece and I cannot honestly tell the difference. Make sure the installer does know what he is doing - there is a certain knack to the install.

Timely. Ding in my ('82) windshield just spread today. Been needing to replace the windshield seal for a while. Interested in the years-of-direct-replacement answers.

I just bought and installed a windshield from Safelite for my 86 Targa and it fit perfect. I looked up your year model on Safelite's website and it cost $320. That is close to what I paid.

Safelite price for cash, no insurance, at their location near me. Looks like it includes the new rubber. I have the rubber already, so maybe even less.

Thanks everyone.....it sounds like I need to clarify a little. The car is a project that I am now getting put together after paint. It has all new rubber including the front windshield. the trim is used but was cut out to maintain the shape as much as possible.

I must have made a mistake on Safelites site because the year didn't go to 1971...I'll try again. Are there direct replacement years and are Targa and coupe windshields interchangeable?

Is the green tinted glass with Blue strip at the the top the standard glass for a 71'. Can anyone confirm that the Targa and Coupe use the same glass for that year. Both seem to be the case based on glass replacement site results.

What might be the quality/distinction, if any, between the factory (Sekurit) windshield,
and the aftermarket units such as Safelite?

I purchased a Pilkington windshield from a local windshield company. Was made in Germany and less then $200 with tax.

It'd be interesting to know. For those of you that purchased your windshield from Safelite, who made the glass. We used to have a contract with Safelite. I've toured their main campus and a couple of local warehouse/install locations. For most high volume cars they used a/m glass, but for many of the low volume and specialty cars they simply stocked the OE spec'd replacement glass. I can't imagine there is a huge market for old 911 windshields.

Per the Porsche parts catalog the windshields are the same between the coupe and targa. 90154110121(clear) or 90154110131(green tint) Let us know what you find / decide for a replacement. My 71 windshield is pitted and I'm going to try to polish it out during my rebuild. If that doesn't work out or I break it during removal or install I'll be looking for replacement ideas.

I purchased mine via EASY Porsche a couple of yrs. ago the stamp on the glass
reads Saint-Gobain Sekurit.
At the time I kept hearing mixed stories about safelite both the glass and installation experiences. And it wasn't something I wanted to do myself.
