Emissions Test Results

Heres a good one for the engineers out there and anyone else that finds this as interesting as me....

My emissions report from today (she failed as usual).

No catalytic converter, Autothority Stage II Chips, MSD ignition, MSD coil, new plugs.

The first line is unburned fuel. How can I improve this? I know that it will always go rich when you go on boost. But what could be causing this at low speed? Injectors?

The 3rd line is what the Cat controls. I will not be putting that back on the car. I like my 3" down pipe and bypass pipe.

The car runs strong and performs great. If I have unburned fuel, that means to me that it could be running better.

Thanks for you thoughts, ideas, conversation.

Higher octane will cause more unburn fuel to be spit out the tail pipe since it is has a high combustion temp. Did you use a very high octane for the test?

Good results have also been had by running a couple bottles of Techron through the tank coupled with spirited driving before hooking up to the sniffer.

Amoco 93 Octane

I could have a bad O2 sensor.

I was telling the guys/gals on the 944 board that I am not concerned about passing as much as I would like to get the car burning fuel better. The program here in Missouri is stupid. If you fail the first time, you have to show reciepts of at least $200 for parts and or labor to try and correct the problem. If you fail again, they give you a waiver. What a tax revenue racket!

I just want optimal horsepower!

Actually, the CAT will reduce all of the top three, with less emphasis on the CO. Putting the cat back on will help considerably.

You're CO is barely passing which means that you are probably running a bit too rich. The MSD will help you - the chip will probably not. It's unreasonable to make these types of modifications, and still expect the engine to pass smog (especially removing the cat)...

I'm curious about this; if you don't have a cat., and no visual inspection, then can the engine be temporarily "tuned-down" to pass the sniffer? I was able to do this on an old carburated car, any chance with a DME-equipped 911?
