MSD Ignition to Distributor - What are you using?

I can't seem to find the necessary info on this - I've been told there's a special wire or something needed to connect an MSD ignition (e.g. 6AL) to the magnetic pickup regular distributor on an 3.0L motor. Is there a special wire or connector needed? Or can I use the exhisting wire that comes out of the dizzy and splice it to wiring harness on the MSD?

Thanks.

I believe that for a magnetic pickup you use the green - and violet + ,wires coming from the MSD.

Yup, that is correct (looking at the MSD wiring diagram). But I only have one wire coming out of my dizzy (3.0L SC), a green wire. What is done for purple?

the green wire from your dist should have inside itself 1 wire and a shield.

Are the interior wires color coded - if not how does one identify each one (I've never opened it up so obviously I've never seen it)?

Here's what I'm working with. Right now it goes to the stock Bosch CD (that was used with CIS) but I'm planning on switch over to the MSD, get the vacuum removed and have it recurved for Webers.

It's not green in the photo due to dirtyness.

I think it is easiest to tap into the distributor wires right where the plug goes into the old cdi unit. There is a great picture of the layout of that plug somewhere on this site. Two male connectors , and you are done. Careful as the directions given in the MSD manual have these two wires transposed. If you car runs poorly, or barely runs at first , you have them switched. Flip them around , and you will be up and running.

you can get a long green wire from a 928 and cut it to fit, kinda pricy. one of the problems is bosch does not sell that wire, only to authorized dealers. Berry Hershon has a plug that fits the MSD to the dissy that is slick.

The green wire has a SINGLE wire and a shield. The shield is the other wire. You connect the green wire to the green wire on the MSD and the purple wire to the shield. it doesn't matter where you connect to these wires.

Do not think you need to splice the green wire. At lest I did not in my 78 930 with 6 pin CDI.

This is how I connected the MSD6AL to the engine harness

Thanks guys. Barry does have a special wire but last I talked to him he wants $100+ for it. If I can just splice the wires together myself - that saves a buck.

Looks like a MSD transition is pretty darn easy.

If the wire in question has one wire protected by a shielding casing...then as far as I am concerned it qualifies as a coaxial cable.
There are tons of types of coaxia wire...from the stuff you run you to your TV...to the special type for instruments.
They all serve the same basic idea....shield the wire from outside voltage pulses.
If you can find it...RG163 is a small diameter coax...used in oscilliscope leads....it is very flexible.
Go down to your local electronics store...and ask to see the different types he has...choose a flexible one...preferably with a multi-strand core wire (for flex)...and strip back the shield to get access to the core wire.
There are crimp on ends in lots of sizes (choose one that grips the centre wire AND the insulation around it) so that the end is best supported for the vibration.
I personally would solder the wire to the crimp end (carefully so that the solder does not run back up the wire and make it brittle) to get best power transfer.
If you have a friend in the electronics industry...he could zip you one up in less than 5 minutes (just tell him the length you need).
Have fun.

You can make your own harness. Use the 3.2 injector repair kit as this will plug into the signal wire @ the Dizzy

The green wire is a shielded wire so the shield is the other wire.

I needed to replace my green wire since it was really brittle and the shielding was exposed at the bend coming out of the dizzy (really common). So, I picked up a new green wire from our host.

Once I had that, I used the long green and purple wire from the MSD kit and cut off a hunk of it from the end with the proper connector. I twisted the wire and put some good shrink tubing over it to hold it together. I then put on a Bosch end similar to the one that Aaron shows in his post. Looks like this when you are all done.

This is what I do also.. Easy.. Plus if you decide to go back, no need to cut and splice..
