New member Into & questions

Hey guys,

Im new to this forum and recently "acquired" a 77 carrera that has a widebody and a spoiler from what I believe is from a 3.2. Currently I am trying to get it started up. A little about the car, lots of oil leaks, triangle of death for sure. Exterior is about a 6, it definitely looks like it has had a crappy re spray. Interior is definetley original and a little ratty. The sunroof works though :) It has a 5 speed, but the second gear im told is shot. A few questions:

Question 1 : This car has 120XXX miles and has the original 5 blade fan...I had been optimistically hoping that a car with that many miles had been upgraded at least a little...so going off the 5 blade fan, its safe to say the motor is original. So my question, how fried do you think the motor is? has anyone had any previous experience with these? I know the rings are probably blown...and am kinda assuming the whole engine needs to be rebuilt...

Question 2 : I have been trying research exactly what this car this is...2.7 carrera. It has a wide body on it, was this a factory option or an aftermarket add-on? For 77 years, carrera was just a body style option and did not denote any additional performance upgrades correct?

Question 3 : the topic of value...the owner wants 12k, after looking at it some more, i feel that is a bit of an optimistic price. Now he has offered me kind of an easy financing deal, so I can always make myself feel better by telling myself the interest is built into the price. However I still feel its a bit high given the mileage and condition.

Thanks for your help guys, I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, or insights.

Trans rebuild $2500. Engine rebuild $5-9k. Reduced value because of the added flares as well as "driver" condition.

Tail is probably aftermarket.

I say no on the buy. Not just reduced price. No.

Did you acqiure it or bought it ? If you bought it...good luck ! Engine won't start, flairs have been added, wheels are not standard. Do you have an engine pic ? If you want to know what you have, post the VIN and the engine number found to the right of the fan housing in a vertical position. Someone here willt ell you what they mean.My opinion would be to run away from this vehicle at that price...you are looking at a massive money pit.

Oh Haha 06-09-2012 08:32 AM

I would pass on this one, given the info you posted.

You can find much nicer, even newer 911s for $12,000.

Bonus problem : I was trying to start it to at least see the running condition, but now the accesories are on with out the key, and when I insert it it turns to start and nothing...So I do believe key port has gone by the wayside (forgive my lack of terminology)

So on the car : I havent bought it yet...there was a car musuem that was liquidating and I had approached the owner about perhaps buying it. It is at my house now, so I can always renege on the deal. But then he threw in this easy payment plan with the stipulation that I fix this frozen calipers on this jaguar kougar...inboard brakes super fun!

So check out this sick engine : I love the aftermarket hose attachment. Sorry for the glare.

Now if I could get it for free that would be another story... but then again probably not. The more I review this car (hadnt seen it in a year) the more I get that money pit feelhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1339260647.jpg

haha potential 911 owners can use this as a what not to buy (or consider buying guide)

I would say a full engine rebuild on a 2.7 including case savers will run more into the 12K range, unless you do a lot of the work yourself. The car is not even worth anywhere close to 12K in parts. I would say if you can get it for 1 to 2 K and are a DYI guy (and a bit of a masochist) then go ahead, otherwise, run!

Thanks guys! I knew I could count on the great minds of PP to give me the Dr Phil treatment and tell it like it is. Well I shall continue my Porsche quest. Like I said this was a weird deal anyway, and I sort of fell into it. I shall tell the owner no go, unless its free and perhaps comes with a dowry.

Thanks again guys!

so not buying, but just out of curiosity, I assume this isnt normal? What would cause this damage? poor jack placement? For reference its on both of the rear floor panels behind the front seats. Thanks!

I bought a 77 almost a year ago setup very much like the one you show, for $2k less than yours, and mine runs pretty well and is in otherwise good condition.

Sounds like you're making the right choice by passing this one up.

Definitely run away. I got a great 79 SC for 12K - no rust, hardly any leakage, great paint, etc. Run from this one! 12K should get you a solid mechanical car with assorted minor issues but no rust - but you'll have to look carefully.

Thanks for adding focus. Damn, that is a lot of money.

I wouldnt buy it if it was free

You will spend what a good 3.2 costs to get it into good shape.

You could buy a very decent car for 12k and I assure you, this isnt it.

could be from jack placement but you would know that by looking under the car to see if its dented that bad

otherwise, my opinion is its normal. mine are the same, in the front as well. i believe its just the sound deadening material that over the years cracks a bit.
