Fuel Pump Rattle?

RIP Bosch fuel pump... it died as of yesterday and provided a whole month worth of service . The mechanic put this pump in, so I'm guessing it is new or rebuilt. Anyways, I went out to start the car and I did not hear the typical buzz of the fuel pump. I just removed it from my car and, when I hold the pump vertically and shake it, the pump rattles like a spray paint can. I don't know how these things work internally, but what would have come loose inside of it to cause this rattle? Just curious. I'm guessing the rattling sound is not normal?

Matt,

Imjust replaced my 23 year old pump on my 89 two weeks ago and i was wondering if i should hear any buzzing as well.Sounds a little too quiet for my liking but all is good so far.The noise you might be hearing when you shake it might be the check valve ?

I'm sure somebody knowledgeable will chime in regarding this ...

Cheers !
Phil

Hmm the check valve is outside of the fuel pump for my car. I inspected it and it was fine. I think the new pumps are quieter. I remember my old one (which lasted for 6 years) was getting pretty noisy before it gave out. When I had the current one installed (which just died), it was much quieter.
