Output flange seal - does depth matter??
HI,
I just replaced both output flange seals on my 85 Carrera. Doing one side at a time, per Bentley's, I removed the flange, pulled the old seal, then pressed the new seal in. I don't have the Porsche tool, but Pete Zimmerman suggested using a bearing race tool, which worked fantastically. Thing is, I didn't really pay attention to how deep the old ones were set. I pressed the new ones in - I'm pretty sure they are deeper than the old ones were. They are maybe 1/8" or so. Does this really matter? Is it possible they are too close to the pinion bearings? Should they be touching the flange (i.e. like more toward flush with the outside of the transmission housing)? I don't want it to leak, but I suppose if it does once I get the car all back on the road I'll just have to unbolt the CV joints again, pull the flanges and put 2 new seals in - just kind of hoping that won't happen. I'm hoping I can leave it as-is. Thanks guys! Mark. |
