The conventional school suggests SSI or a set of stock 1974 style heat exchangers with a dual in dual out muffler. If you don't need heat, headers......both usually require oil line re-routing/replacement.
Depending on where you live it may not be smog legal and will be louder than stock.... |

Mike was right the first time. 1974 had the early style HE's. They got crappy in 1975.

I believe Mike intended to say "Pre-1974 "
otherwise it would sound as if it were only 1974 exchangers. Paul Freres book says the Cat style were on all the I-series cars (1976). So, while the change apparently happened at different times, for differrent markets, (and different cars) I think it's safe to say look for the SSI's or the Pre-1974 heat exchangers. California, for example had thermal reactors in 1974; changing the exchanger type. Last edited by island911; 03-28-2002 at 06:09 PM.. |

All depends.
On how much you want to spend.
The modifications go from as little as $200 to $2000. If you do it yourself, you can get SSI exchangers with a stainless muffler for around $1200 to $1400. My biggest problem was once I had the exchangers off, I did everything else that I'd been postponing that was easy at the time including replacing return tubes, replacing heater boxes, etc. The pre-74 and SSI exchangers give you the best HP increase. I installed a SSI's with a dual out Dansk muffler on my 79SC and I personally love the sound. Unlike a Carrera, the SC is limited in what you can do to increase HP without modifying the engine. The exhaust system is one of the few items so I say maximize it. |

A cat by-pass and a Bursch muffler is good for around 10HP for about $500.00.Pretty good for the money.... it's all about how much do you want to spend.... how fast do you want to go ?

I too put a 74 SSI on my 78SC. Loosing the Cat. is always a small boost. The biggest bolt on HP increase I've found is replacing the clutch, PP, and flywheel with aluminum. This especially helped out the low end.

I opted for the pre74 heat exchangers on my 79SC with a stock 2 in / 1 out pre74 muffler. Pretty amazing difference in performance. Last week, despite the wifeys threats about cutting me off, I bought a new Bursch steelpack muffler. Man! that bursch really makes the SC fly. Kind of sounds like a sport bike when you get on it. I am very happy with this exhaust set up.

Ahh, Island, not correct. You would be correct to say pre-1975, as the 1974 system was exactly the same as previous years...
The california cars in 1974 *did not* have the thermal reactors. These were introduced in the 1975 year (see 1974-89 parts book)... If you have to keep your car semi-stock for emissions reasons, then I would recommend the GHL system: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/exhaust_system_upgrades/exhaust_system_upgrades.htm This is a highly recommended system by many, many of our customers. They have been very happy with the sound and performance... -Wayne
