'82 SC heater confusion...
hi there! have just been delving into why my heater isnt working, and i've been reading a few threads on heaters and autoheat, and i'm not quite sure how my car's system is supposed to work, between the seats it has one lever and a dial with 3 settings, i've found the cable has broken right where it goes through the lever so thats why my flapper box vents won't close, but no blower fan turns on either when the lever is lifted, or when the dial is turned to 1 2 or 3. i took some photos of the inside to compare with other SC's to see if mine has been messed with, or if it's supposed to look like this?
the type of lever and dial ![]() the lever is not connected to any wires, and it doesnt make contact with anything when lifted either, and there's a whole bunch of spare wires i'm not sure if they're supposed to be connected to anything... ![]() the underneath/inside of the console with the dial on it ![]() and it's a right hand drive if that makes any difference at all... thanks in advance for any help!! |

Under the parking brake housing you will find the control cable to the flapper boxes. Yours will have one cable that is looped together at the control lever and then splits to the two guide tubes and to the left and right flapper boxes.
The ball on the lever would be attached to a control rod (NLA) that is attached to a servo motor in the heater control housing. Yours appears to be missing. I got lucky and a fellow Pelican gave me an extra he had. As far as the wiring goes, there will be a wire for the temp sensor above the rear view mirror, a wire for the temp sensor near the left flapper box, power, ground, and switch wire to the heater blower motor. The control cables freeze up in the guide tubes and break. They are easily replaced. You have to remove the e-brake housing to get to it. It's cheap and Pelican has them. Clean the gunk out of the tubes and lubricate the new cables when you replace them. You can operate your heat without the auto heat controller by just pulling up on the heat lever. It will open both flapper boxes and close the switch to the blower motor.

oh rad, thats been a big help, thanks josh! i'm wondering if my control switch has been wired straight to the blower motor, bypassing the servo coz of the missing rod... and that'd be why there's just the 2 yellow wires that actually go anywhere. i couldn't find a sensor above the rear view mirror, possibly coz it's a cabriolet?
the pull wire is broken right in the middle, so i'll try and make a new one of them(its a long wait and bunch of postage to get parts in Australia). the wire was really stuck in those tubes, i got it moving but definitely gotta give them a good clean out, i was just thinking spray WD40 in there and just shove the old cables through a few times 'till they slide through easily? also, any hints on detatching the handbrake cable from the assembly to give me a bit more access, i couldnt find anything on it on pelican, really gotta hurry up and get me a bentley manual... |

That's not an auto heat console so you don't have the sensors.
I think the the dial is what controls the blower and the lever is manually adjusted.

i'm starting to think my '82 SC is a bit of a frankenstien, with what i think is an out-of-factory cab conversion, no air cond, heater control from who knows when...
