The deed is done, worlds most expensive distributor on the way!

I weighed my options and came to the conclusion that I did a bonehead thing when I sacrificed my dist. I am now paying the price. I was swayed away from crankfire ignitions by complexity and many relative unknowns on the install and calibration. When I get this dist I can bolt her up and not worry about it again. It is coming from Andial and is brand spanking new in the box(ewwww now I feel better) not a rebuild. There is one question that maybe Warren can answer which is this. The P/N on my old unit is 0 237 301 002 this is the Bosch number not the Porsche number which I found from Andial are different. Anyway this one is 0 237 301 001. Now Andial(whom I trust) say this is your huckleberry and I don't know why yours ended in 002 but this is the only dist. offered for '75-'77 930's. Probably not a big deal but hey here we go again? For what it is worth Wayne shows my dizzy on his site (though NLA) and it also ends in 001 so I think I'll be fine. Wow I just spent nearly $1200 for a distributor! Good lord what has become of me, I am actually embarrassed. Someone please console me.

Ouch. Did the guy on the phone make you squeal like a pig when he took your credit card number?

The last 3 digits are usually a revision number. If there are different manufacturers, I wouldn't worry about them being different. My Boxster has part numbers ending in "007" for what it's worth...

You may have a point but then again no. Have you ever owned a rover? Thats usually what hay want me to spend after each oil change(no I don't do it) and I'm not kidding! Live it up boys you have till tomorrow when it gets here to mock and ridicule me I actually encourage it as I deserve it and a least I might get some laughs. Then once it is in the car there will be no more mention of this allowed, we will all pretend this never happened and I will beg Wayne to remove this thread. It is a grim day that will best be forgotten. Let me have it!

Well okay, if you want a scolding, I'll say that trashing the old distributor may have been a mistake. But enough of that.

I suggested crankfire, but you have also made a good choice staying stock. In fact, this new distributor is probably going to make you very happy in terms of performance. And although $1200 sounds like a lot, it is not more than I would guess particularly for a NEW unit. Distributors are seldom cheap and they can be WILDLY expensive. We tend to think of our Porsches as terribly expensive, but compared to what? Compared to chevrolets, perhaps they are a bit more expensive though not that much. Compared to other high-performance euro track-able cars....they're dirt cheap. In fact, just try to build a competitive Chevrolet track car. Porsches are less expensive.

Anyway, I know this stings a bit, but it will also be easy to forget.

Hey all in good fun, we've all had some P-car horror stories.

Besides, your so close to me I might see you on the highway sometime!

BTW My present dist. advances sometimes and as soon as I get my spare rebuilt, I'll rebuild the one in the car. My OEM dist. isn't far behind your at $600. Hell, I just bought a spare engine for half that!

Oh well life goes on, you do what you got to do.

let us know when its running so we can fear that turbo!

I'll console you.

1) Tried to cheat costs and bought a $550 all glass tail rather than OEM rubber lipped. It sucked. It weighed too much, and it's in my shed half stripped and useless.
2) Bought my first cab top, cut costs, paid $500 for non-german canvas, and after 5 months and a bad install, decided it needed to be replaced, bought german canvas for $750, and that's what I kept.
3) Bought non OEM carpet for $350. Sucked. Too thick didn't work right, kept it for a year, then replaced with black german knit for $475 cut locally. That will stay in there.
4) Bought K&N cone. F!cked up my air flow meter and kept coming loose. That's $199 in the *****ter.
5) Have a bursch muffler. Paid $189 for that. I'll use it for emissions day (since it has one out), but other than that, it's a waste.

Feel a little better? Just learn from my mistakes and don't keep making the same kinds of mistakes.
The key being, you made the right move in replacing the distributor rather than potentially compound your problems with other gimmicks!

For that kind of money, I'd grab a hand sledge and beat some more crap out of the old one .... It's good for the blood pressure and restores balance in the universe.

I do like the idea of the two spending some time together so the new one can ridicule the old one.

I have done a bit of research on rebuilding the distributor and, though I have the part numbers, cannot find anyone who can provide the twin bushes and other bits and pieces for the SC distributor. All recommended reconditioned or NOS.

Also, the $1,200.00 price is not at all out of line. I was pretty surprised to see what these cost. Of course, I compare these prices to the Lucas distributors I had to find in the olden days...

Have you priced a 928 distributor? I've seen them advertised for $1400 new. Please don't anyone say that they could get one cheaper, that would not make him feel better :-)

Gosh, I can't believe that you couldn't have sent your old one out to be refurbished. They usually don't just disintegrate and fall apart. Even if you have tried to fix it yourself, you can have them repaired. Cam lobes can be rewelded, rehardened, and reground just like camshafts. $1200 seems like a very high price to pay considering that you have a perfectly good core that can be reworked. I would imagine it wouldn't cost more than $350-$500...

Buck up, camper, wipe those tears away. It's not rainny every day.
When you consider it, it could've been a lot worse. You could go to a dealership and hand them the $1200. They'd pocket it and say "that's a good start".
Knowing you've got the shinyest, newest distributor on the board....priceless. Show us the old one, I love gore.

Boy it must hurt to pay list.

I bought a brand new Distributor 930 602 015 01 for my 3.2L twin plug conversion for $457.50 brand new complete with caps and rotors. Now the Andial spliter was $600.00 but oh well it's only money.

There is the counterpoint that the early Turbos are worth a bunch of money, and it's a good investment to keep them stock. Running the wrong dizzy will eventually blow up your motor if you're not careful...

930 distributor # and prices

I believe the original factory # for your car is: 930-602-101-00. If this is correct, the dealer retail is 1092.00. So Andial is not that far off the mark. The local dealer in my area would sell them for 928.62 - but having a good part # and actually being able to find one are 2 different things! How much is your time worth?? Seems like Andial has your answer. Good luck.
