Cracked Fan Housing?
Replaced the alternator this week, and when I had it all apart and cleaned up the housing noticed what looked like stress cracks in the housing. They appeared to get more stressed when I bolted the alt back in! I am hoping after I get the whole thing back in that I will be OK.
Anyone ever welded the fan housing? What kind of alloy is it anyway?

I believe it is Magnesium.... It can be welded
but you need to find someone that knows how to weld Magnesium.... I would get it fixed before putting it back together. If you have no luck finding a welder you should be able to pickup a used housing....

Vance,
Found exactly the same thing in my fan housing. Welded it up at a local shop for $25. It is a mix and not for a home welder (unless they are very good) to try. Joe

I just had it done too and my welder said it is a mix of magnesium and tin. Very hard to weld, but he got it done for me.

Small cracks should not be a problem, as you can run it with them there. Big cracks should be addressed...

On reinstalling, be cautious when tightening the strap. Too tight will cause the stress associated with causing the cracks.
