Glovebox lock revisited... HELP!!!
 

OK, I only have 1 key. The VALET key. I can start my car and lock the doors, but I cannot lock the glovebox.

I took the glovebox lock out. I was planning to disassemble- removing enough pins (maybe all) so that my only key will both lock and unlock the glovebox.

Problem! The glovebox lock assembly is held together by an annoyingly small pin. If I drive the pin into the lock assembly, I'm sure I will never get it back out again.

How do I disassemble this little beast?

I have the same problem as you, but my glve box is LOCKED!! I have been told the only difference between the valet key and the master key is a grove in the shank. You can get a master key cut from your valet key using a master blank. I hope this works!

If your lock looks like this one, you actually pull the pin out. Once you pull it out you'll see the tumbler. This type of lock has waffers not pins. I just put the ignition key in and filed down the waffers level with the barrel. This way the barrel will turn and lock and unlock. You can use anything (cut nail) for another pin if you need it. Did the same for the front hood release lock. Now one key fits all.

Yea, you can pound all you want. It will not go in the cylinder. You may indeed need a new pin. Just grab it with a small needle nose and twist it out. Just make sure you remember how it all goes back together. But its not rocket surgery.

For chrisakes, just go to the dealer and have a master key cut! Leave your poor glovebox lock alone! :eek:

The key I have is a master blank purchased from Pelican. I had it cut at a locksmiths. It DOES NOT lock the glovebox. The grooves appear identical to the original old key I got with the car.

Do you think the dealer will still carry a "master" blank from a 1983 911?

Yes.

Red one is valet, black is master. Is that what you got? Dealer has them, can also get original code for your car, though it should not be necessary if locks have not been changed and you have the valet key. Good luck.
