911 C2 1991, check engine light on, engine sounds running out of fuel...

while I am driving, the check engine light turns on, the engine sounds like it's running out of fuel and does backfire when I press the gas pedal. I have to pull over, shut off the engine and restart. After few attempts, the engine will turns back normal...
I got the DME relay and the oxygen sensor replaced, but still the same.
Anyone had this problem already? Could it be the fuel pump?

Thks,
Dan

Or the fuel filter.....probably a good idea to look at fuel pressure. When was the last time it was changed?

Are you a DIY type or do you have a mechanic? Cheap and easy replacement.

Might want to start a journal with date of maintenance of items like this if you don't have a history from the previous owner.

Oh....BTW, welcome to the board.

Might want to list your location.

Thks Joe! I usually am a DIY type, and have my Porsche mechanic when it's I don't have time or it's too much...
I left the car at the garage for tests, after a 30 mins road test and 20 mins on park, it never did it. I picked the Porsche up and drove it home, and did it on the way just 5 minutes after I left.

I have the same year motor in my SC.....so I know good fuel flow is a requirement.

BTW, when it dies does anything go wonky on your gauges, lights, radio or anything else electrical?

An easy route would be to buy the Durametric so you can read the check code from the computer, This should tell you whats going on.

When it happens, everything else works fine, lights, radio, heater, gauges... But the rpm and the oil pressure one wich goes up and down as the engine is about to stall.

Sounds like fuel starvation.

I also remarked just before this problem happens, if I am waiting at the light, the RPM starts to go up a little by itself, and then the check engine light turns on with a choking session...

I will replace the fuel filter this week end and see if it goes better. If not, I guess my next step will be the pump...

Good luck....it's a maintenance item like an oil change. Pumps aren't cheap.....
