Aftermarket A/C (supposedly dealer installed Option)

Just a quick question on aftermarket A/C, was it normal for the front floor to be hacked up to install the condenser and what appears to be a drain. I was pretty shocked when I pulled back the carpet and saw that tonight. Car is a 74 Targa, and like it says in the title, it was supposedly dealer installed. Thanks for any replies.

There was a thread a year or so back showing a pretty bad hack job that was supposedly dealer installed. I didn't find it when I searched. I did happen across this older thread:
Early 911 Air Conditioning Seems that the dealers could do a pretty good butcher job.

This was apparently rather common for the mid-year cars. My '76 911 had a "dealer installed" KCoool system. The "firewall" openings to the smuggler's box appeared to have been made with hole saws and a cold chisel. What was more distressing were the holes punched at the front and back of the right rocker (inside the fenders) to run the refrigerant lines. Given the poor quality of the work I suspect the dealers contracted the job outside on a fixed price basis. I cleaned up some of the openings, sealed the rest, rerouted hoses. and began sliding down the "slippery slope" of making 911 AC work well.

Wow

I guess it seems to be pretty common that the dealers hacked up that area to put that A/C in, still don't make me feel too great about it, even though it is covered. I was thinking I might need to cut a little more off to clean it up (edges are rusting as it doesn't look like it was ever painted or anything to protect it) and make it look better or take all of it out and have it patched. Thanks.

Thanks Jim and Von, I see you both live in Los Alamos, used to live in ABQ my self, used to ride Jemez a lot, passed by Los Alamos several times. The other holes for the lines in the trunk and hood area look pretty clean, its just that disturbing hole on the passenger floor board area that sucks to see.

In this thread you can see an image of the "dealer installed" hack job done to the passenger foot well of my '76; I cut away most of the ligaments between the saw hole holes to get better air flow and the used the remnants as tabs to mount a muffin type booster fan to blow air into the evaporator.
