Black flywheel seal OK now?
Posted this elsewhere in my engine drop thread, but I don't think many people are reading that for the "while you are in there" fixit issues.
I just replaced my flywheel seal. The old seal I carefully pried out with a pick and managed to not scratch up either the crank or the case. I tapped the new seal in after coating the outer edge in Hylomar non-hardening gasket goo. This has proven very good on various other similar locations on my 356 projects, so I hope it does the trick here too. I tapped it in until it was flush with the rim of the case with a wooden block and a hammer, going evenly all around. It was quite a tight fit, the Hylomar, which is quite tacky, probably made it a little slower to seat than normal. One question: the seal was the "all black" version which says Porsche. In searching, people are adamant that the two-tone (viton) seals are the only way to go. I got this version when I ordered part # 999-113-426-41-M204. I ordered this a little over a year ago and have had it ever since waiting for this project...is there another version of the seal I should have ordered, or will I be OK? I'd almost rather pry out this new one, order a "better" seal, and do it right now rather than having to drop the engine right after I install it. Thanks for the input.

Just to clarify:
Pelican parts sells two flywheel seals for 911/911 Turbos, 1978 - 1989. They are: 999-113-426-41-M17, which is a dark red/brown seal, Kaco brand, currently $14.50 and 999-113-426-41-M204, which is a black seal, Victor Reinz brand, and currently $19.00 I've got the latter one. I find it hard to believe that 1) the more expensive part is even worse, performance-wise, than the less expensive one, and 2) if there was a better version that was commonly known, Wayne wouldn't stock it for sale on his site. What's the truth?

Pelican e-mail support replied,
"It's true the one you got is the latest and greatest seal made for Porsche (by a company called Kaco), but again, I've never heard anything bad about it and we sell alot of them." They were also more than happy to source a seal from one of the other manufacturers such as Elring or Victor Reinz. I guess I'll be the latest guinea pig and give it a shot. I'll post a follow-up if it leaks!

Bringing an old thread to the top.
I have the exact same question as the original poster. Im swapping out the RMS / Flywheel seal on my 95 993, and I ordered the seal from a Porsche dealer. Its the new revision of the all black Kaco seal ending in -41. My current seal ends in -40. Ive run across several posts warning about the all black seal, but not sure it applies to the new revision of the Porsche branded Kaco seal. The new revision has larger diameter spring in it and the new seal has a considerably smaller ID than the old seal. Ive also read that the Viton based seals are superior, but again not sure Ive already installed the Kaco seal, but wont be able to install the trans till next weekend, so have time to re-order a new one if that will give me the best chance of success. Any help from folks with direct experience would be greatly appreciated. David |

Guys,
I ended up completely tearing the motor down, and when I did so, the seal I used was a green/teal one made by Goetze/Victor Reinz. It hasn't leaked. It looks like this: ![]() In the end, I think the black one is probably fine. It's all about prep work of the sealing surfaces, and positioning of the seal in the bore.
