well, the a/c was starting to smell a little funny, like something was cooking, perhaps rotten eggs.
so I turned it off immediately and waited 10 minutes. when I turned it back on, nothing happened, no air blowing! could the blower have burned out? thanks for replying |

Check fuse block under hood, also all connection points at switches and thermostat. Is evaporator blower still running? Have you put an inline fuse in condensor fan blower? If not, do so.

I checked all the fuses in the front and they all look fine.
as far as the evaporator blower goes, i dont even know what that looks like. all i know is that there isnt any air being pushed out from the vents, it's just dead. could the blower be dead? how much for a new one. thanks |

Is it just when the A/C is on? If not, it is might be a siezed fresh air blower motor. If you are looking under the trunk, the blower housing is under the black cardboard panel. The evaporator is the unit that is under the little "trap door" just above the gas tank. Also I would check the front condenser blower motor (in the front trunk next to the battery), as they are notorious for burning out.

Appears to me that your blower motor is the problem. The smell was probably the plastic burning. Usually the busings are the problem and when they go, the motor is history. Sorry for the bad news.

hey, thanks for all your input..so how much am I looking at for a new blower?
is this the same blower for the fresh air or does the a/c unit use a different motor blower. for example, when I turn the top lever all the way to the right, THAT blower turns on and pushes air out the vents. |

If your P-car is set up the same way as my 78, then that motor is for outside fresh air. There is another motor in the engine compartment for heat and another small motor in the front of the car for the condesning unit.

Steve,
at this point, I am trying to identify the blower motor just for the a/c system. if this motor is held within a plastic housing and the housing is good, then all I need to replace is the motor itself. there is a plastic housing next to the battery (looks like the horn, maybe?) towards the very front of the car, near the pumps for the windshield washer system. could the blower motor for the a/c be inside that? I'm going to post some pictures cause they are worth a thousand words. |

Currently I'm working on getting my ac working again, so I'll tell ya what I've found so far. You should have several blower motors. One on the engine, one up front behind that cardboard that circulates fresh air from the outside and heated air from the engine. You have another blower that sucks air from the interior over the evaporator and blows it back into the interior. You have another blower motor located next to the battery that blows air across your front condensor. Check a couple of other posts on the front condensor blower motor since it appears that it likes to go bad and start fires, ie the guys remark about adding an in-line fuse to the wire for its power. Sounds to me like your evaporator blower motor, beneath that door next to the gas tank has quit working. Several different wires are up there that run from the controls in the console to a small switch mounted somewhere around the blower motor. On my car that switch and the wires running to it were fried/melted at some point. Hope this helps. Of course if you have an early 80s 911 you have a blower motor in the footwells also, but I don't think they are related to your problem.

The 69 - 85 evaporator blower is a other unit then the fresh air blower. The 86 - 89 looks like the frash air unit but has a longer motor. Maybe the resistorcascade burnt trough. Grüsse |

o.k. here's the deal. The motor that has failed is probably the evaporator blower motor. This is the motor that blows air through the center vents and only works when you turn the a/c rotary switch on. It is located in the "smuggler's box", which is in the front trunk-under the carpet by the passenger side. The motor is held in a plastic housing, which can be removed. I would suggest checking to see if it is "seized" up and attempt to free it with oil. If you can get it to turn freely by hand, run it before re-installing it so you can verify that it is not squealing. If it squeals, it will fail again very shortly and I would recommend replacing the blower motor assembly complete w/ plastic housing. Just to verify, this is NOT the motor to the left of the battery by the horn. This is NOT the motor behind the black cardboard cover in the front trunk. It IS inside the smuggler's box and sits directly on top of the evaporator. The plastic housing/cover seals the evaporator to prevent warm air from entering the system. You will also want to check the wiring AT THE FUSE BOX that is associated w/ this motor-I think the fuse is the 2nd position starting from closest to the windshield. A loose fuse holder can overheat the WIRING going to the fuse. Good luck and let me know what you find.
