Alternator Replacement: Valeo or Bosch rebuild
Which is the alternator of choice for an 89 Carrera....Valeo or Bosch...Huge price difference from our host. What do you get for the extra $$'s.. Or, should I just take the orginal Paris Rhone/Valeo to a local rebuilder? I live in Orlando FL.

I found a well regarded local shop to rebuild mine. Given the complaints I've seen regarding the FLAPS rebuilds I felt way better about that.

Porterdog is correct. Take your existing alternator to a reputable auto electric shop and have it rebuilt. Much less expensive and the quality will be much better. It's just an alternator, much like all the others....so it doesn't need to be taken to a Porsche specialist.

Anyone know what I should expect to pay for a quality rebuild at a local shop?

Mine was ~$150 and took a couple days.
Another advantage of this is that your car retains originality (assuming the one you're having rebuilt is the original.) Doesn't *really* matter to me, but I found that aspect attractive in an OCD kind of way

I agree on local rebuilds......you can control the quality. You get your old unit back and you know it fits.
Repair costs can be $80-200 depending on what needs fixing.
