Squeaky/sticky shift when hot
 

Hello

I have a 70 911E. When the car gets hot after driving the freeway the shift gets very squeaky and tightens up considerably. Normally, no other problems with shifting other than 2nd which can be a little finicky at times.

Im hoping this is just shift bushings but I wanted to get some other, more knowledgeable takes on this.

Last fluid service on the trans?

April of this year...about 800 miles since.

Which fluid?

The receipt says gear oil. I purschased the car in the spring, my mechanic went over the entire car and changed all fluids, etc.

911 trannies are particular in the fluid they use. Swepco is a preferential fluid. Might wanna ask your wrench.

What do you mean tightens up? Does this mean it is difficult to get into gear? or does it mean that it is difficult to move the shifter (i.e L to R in the neutral plane?)

If the shifter moves easily but does not want to go into gear you might look at shift coupler alignment (assuming your gear oil is good).

If the shifter is stiff then you need to lubricate the ball mechanism and possibly the ball cup, shift rod inside the actual shifter.

My '74 does the same thing. The hotter it gets, the stiffer it gets. It is hard, for example, to pull it out of gear, then equally hard to push it into the next gear. No grinding, just stiff movement. Shifts much better when cool.

Trans was rebuilt properly, oil used is Kendall. The shift coupler has new bushings, and the clutch releases and engages smoothly in about the middle of the pedal travel.

Funny, my '87 is acting the same way. 4th and 5th are difficult to move once it's hot.

Just replaced the shifter bushing and wished I'd have greased the ball that the shifter bolts to.

I think this is some sort of lubrication issue with the shifter - just dont know why it would happen when it warms up and not necessarily from city driving where the shifter would be used a lot.

Check to make sure that the cable is in not coming out of the guide on the side of the transmission. May require a small adjustment. I had this problem, it does not take much. There are some threads on this but I cannot find them right now. This is the large open ended guide on the side of the transmission.

Possibly the front shifter bushing under the lever has become brittle and stiff.
