Rally-Type Communication System on a budget?
Guys,
I'm beginning to get into DE events and rallies, and I'd like a communications system that 1) provides clear communication for the driver and co-driver 2) allows the driver/co-driver conversation to be transmitted to a radio within 25 miles and 3) allows the co-driver to speak with an individual not in the car via radio. I think the latter two features would be great so that family/friends/support crew can listen into the conversation, and I could contact them if needed. I'm not necessarily looking for a top-notch, pro system. I'm just looking for a solution that will meet these goals. Can anyone recommend an economical solution short of this bad boy: http://peltorcomms.3m.com/world/Product.asp?PageNumber=924&ProductCategory_Id=28&Product_Id=54

I don't know anything about radios for broadcasting, but have you looked at the student systems like this?

Hi there - I've used something like that before. The price looks great, but I'd ideally like a solution that also allows for radio communication, such that:
1. The driver/co-driver conversation can be transmitted out via radio 2. The co-driver has the ability to speak with someone outside the car via radio This may require integrating two systems. I'm not really sure yet.

Andy, The system your asking for is out there in use with most all Fire Departments and Aircraft. Headsets with intercom between driver and passenger and also a push-to-talk button on the side of the headset for activating your Motorola/Kenwood whatever FM transceiver. Your 25 mile range depends on radio output power; antenna and location of the group your trying to communicate with. These systems can be bought "used" from time to time when departments are upgrading there equipment. "Fire Comm" is one of the companies that sells this type of equipment here in Oregon. Expensive new, $1500 up. I have seen some used systems sell for $350.
