no you need both, the allen holds the alt. shaft from turning while you tighten with the pulley wrench

I use a 15/16" box end wrench and the allen wrench.

Did you put the key in there? No key = slippage.

Tippy, no that's the thing. There wasn't a key in there. There is nota slot for the key in the alternator shaft.

Well if there isn't a slot on the alt shaft for a key and there isn't a slot on the pulley, then then is no need for a woodruff key. Put the back pulley on the shaft, the appropriate amount of shims, the belt, the outside pulley, the outside shims, the bolt.....

The using a box wrench tighten the bolt. Use a 12 point allen and keep the shaft from moving whilst tightening the bolt. Check tension. Adjust shims if needed.

Make sure it's the right allen key. Strip out the allen and you FUBAR the alt.

Success! Tested the alternator (which is why I took it all apart in the first place) and its charging properly.

My druck press dial was acting up though during my test drive though. At idle it sits at 1. Between 1000 and 2000 rpm it was jumping all around. Over 2000 it's straight up to 5 in the druck press instrument gauge.

I checked the oil level afterwards and the level was normal.

Haven't researched this at all, but anyone know anything about this off the top of their head?

sounds like a ground problem or the sender or the gage or the wire (hehehe) check the wire from the sender to the gage with a multimeter and a extension piece of wire. wiggle the sender wire to make sure you don't have an intermittent open in the wire. Start a new thread if the problem continues. good to hear about the alt., make a note in the owners manual so the next owner doesn't have the same challenge.
