Replacement Speedo cable

Hi there,

My speedo cable has broken right at the crimmped part that plugs into the back of the speedo. I see on pelican that they sell the cable only without the sheath/casing. A better alternative as the sheath is quite difficult to feed through the transmission tunnel . I see on pelicans parts that you can buy just the cable without the sheath. So, I retrieved the broken part of my cable (the crimmped part that plugs into the back of the speedo) and found that it won't pass throught the hole in the sheath at the transmission end, so I don't understand why just the cable is available if it can't be fed through the sheath. I've logged a ticket with Pelican, but thought I would ask here also. Can anyone clarify if I'm missing something here? maybe the the crimmped part is smaller on the replacement cables only and will in fact feed through the casing?

Any help is appreciated.

Adam

The part that broke off, the part that goes into the back of the speedo, it's a square drive shaft isn't it? It seems to me there is a retaining ring--possibly a circlip--that fits between the square end and the opening of the sheath but I could be mistaken. If that piece is on your broken end, then it would not fit through the sheath and replacement cables would not have it as it would be reused from the old one.

That's my only idea on this.

Yes it's square and appears to be crimped onto the cable. And the hole in the sheath at the tranny end with the big nut is just too small for the square piece to go through.

Thanks for the input though.

I've only replaced the cable/sheath together so that's very interesting information. Sounds like the factory assembles the cable through the case and then crimps on the end (?)

I know there are Pelicans who have replaced just the internal cable. Hopefully, one of them will reply to this thread.

EDIT: Just found this post from an old thread: "the factory cable had a replacable cable..and you could leave the housing in the car...ALL after market cables are crimpt on both end making it impossible to replace...The easy way to replace is to cut the big end off (trans end) and safty wire than tape to make smooth the newcable to the old and pull it up to the trunk..unclip cable at pedal box and tunnel first"Speedometer Cable- Remove cable from housing?

Posted by Willhelm back in 2008. This might apply to your situation..

I changed the cable on one of my old cars years ago, and was able to feed the cable through the sheath ... Not sure how many things changed year to year that would make incompatibility with cables and shealths..

Well, that thread seems to clear that up. Thanks.
New casing and cable then. Done this job once before and I don't relish doing it again.

Cheers guys
