Anyone installed a gauge in the empty, rectangular slot right of the driver's vent?

Hey Guys,

I'm planning to run a J&S Safeguard for knock control in my '87 Carrera after an engine rebuild, and I'd like to find an inconspicuous location for this knock/retard monitor:

I noticed that there is an empty, rectangular gauge slot (I believe for a headlight height control level?) in between the driver's side vent and the headlight switch. The gauge from J&S is a standard 2 1/16" size, and obviously won't fit this slot. However, all I really care to see is the stack of LEDs on the gauge. John from J&S has agreed to provide me just the electronics within the gauge, so that I can install "the gauge" in rectangular slot pictured below.

Has anyone had success mounting a gauge here?

Bump. Just curious if anyone has installed gauges here. I would love to see some pictures!

on such a nice looking car i don't think id be cutting holes in the dash

I've seen the driver's ac vent replaced with another vent that had a boost gauge in it. Perhaps that's an option.

or a slot in your central pod.

Quick clarification - that's not my car ;) I just posted one that pictured the rectangular section I'm referring to. Yeah, I'm lazy.

I'm interested in that particular spot because I think it would be a very clean install. Basically, I'd just like to see the LEDs appear within that rectangle.

For me that area would be partially hidden by my arm and possibly the steering wheel.

Here's an idea, albeit probably not cheap. Send the electronics along with your oil temp/pressure guage to North Hollywood Speedo. Have them inlay the new lights into the blank area at the top. Now you have all you 'engine monitoring' mostly in one spot.

How about just using premium gas, then you won't need the gauge.

Think the NHS idea is the least invasive idea

Yeah, North Hollywood for sure. Make it look stock and like it's supposed to be there, if at all possible.

how about replacing the clock?

john walker's workshop 07-08-2012 08:57 AM

put it in the carpeted kick panel.

You could probably adapt something like this, no? Made by "duostyling" They make a range of gauges.

Brian

Are you talking about the 2 AC vent in the center?

The witdh/height ratio seem to be different than the gauge above.

Since my A/C is out, I would like to fit some gauge there.

No, this one is on the left, next to the headlight knob. The dash was redesigned for 86 and the ac vents got bigger on the side and center.

Yes, I got the 1983 midget one versions...

Thanks for the idea.

If you remove the ashtray, you can put a bracket there like I did to hold a voltmeter plus my (aged) XM radio...
