Can this relay be repaired?

Here is a picture of the common round relay used on my 911.

Sorry the picture is blurry.

Can these relays be repaired? Why do they fail do begin with.

The contacts on this one appear to be clean and not pitted or stuck.

Thanx L

WWMD (What Would MacGyver Do?) The round relays are about $20. Besides getting you out of a tight situation, it could be good practice for diagnostic and soldering skills.

The electromagnetic coil (control path) could be either shorted or open. The coil wire, while appearing bare, is insulated with a clear coating. Thus, breaks in the insulation, leading to a short circuit, are difficult to identify and can lead to overheating as well as inconsistent relay operation.

If an open circuit within the coil, not much you can do unless you really want to unwind and replace (you have that much time?). However, if visible, e.g. broken solder joint, you can attempt to resolder, then retest.

An ohmmeter and continuity test on a working relay will provide reference specs to compare with a malfunctioning relay coil.

Then again, some folks seem to accumulate working relays to share:

If its the outer coil winding that's visibly broken, yes.
