Lizard Skin Sound Control
 

Started shooting the lizard Skin sound control product on Friday and let it flash dry for two hours. Then, started the 2nd coat. It was over 100 outside so I was not worried about to little on the cure time. Next I started laying in all the new carpet. When she was all back together the sound difference was amazing. I still have to pray the tire wells.

How much does that stuff weigh? Any chance you weighed your car before and after?

The bucket had a weight of 7 lbs. I only used half the bucket.

What's the suggested mil thickness and what thickness did you apply?

I used dynamat on mine. The shelf, behind the rear seats, under the seats, the floor all the way up to the firewall and the doors.
Stuff works great, but weighs a ton.

Yours came out great. Probably half the cost and 1/10th the weight. Good job.

Not sure on the mil thickness. I shot both coats about as thick as a quarter.I left the original matting on the floorboards, I was able to shoot this product righ over the top. Just make sure you clean everything very well with paint thinner. I'm going to do my Tacoma Truck next.

What type of gun do you need to spray it with? I looked at their product and they stated that is was water based. Why did you have to use thinner for clean up?

He used paint thinner for cleaning the surface BEFORE painting.

looks good but for anyone doing this in the future it's best to remove the factory installed asphalt sheets prior to installing any modern products.

Nice stuff and looks good...those stock insul/heat mats weigh a freakin ton and don't work any better than the modern light stuff.
I used 1/8 in closed cell foam backed by foil to do that whole shelf/seat area and it weighed 2 lbs total....sounds exactly the same.

Did you spray inside the doors?

I'm spraying the fender wells, and the insides of the doors this weekend. Tjhe product comes with the spray gun and mixing blade. The only reason I cleaned down the car with thinner is to remove and oil/glue from all the old material.

So no foam or sound barrier under the carpet? Lizardskin's website talks about this spray being a dampener..wondering if you needed a barrier such as this: Sound Deadener Showdown - Your Source for Sound Deadening Products and Information

to get that "luxury ride" quiet you need more than just a damper, but a damper is the first step. it lowers the resonant frequency of the metal panels and helps control vibration which does deter some of the road noise, but it is not a blocker. i have never personally used the spray/paint versions but the stick on type (like second skin damplifier or dynamat xtreme) only require 25% coverage and only on large flat panels. any more than that and you are wasting time, effort and money. the next step is a 2 part process using ccf (closed cell foam) and mlv (mass loaded vinyl). the foam is a decoupler and the mlv actually blocks the noise. typically for the combo to be effective both layers need 100% coverage and this is where the weight comes in as a good mlv needs to weigh 1lb/ft2.

Good on the OP for using this! I plan on using the same. Lizard Skin has a sound control and heat insulation product they recommend using together for the best results. There's an Italian user of Earlysregistry that used this as well and seem to happy with how it's workiing out so far.
