My '86 Carrera, and why I bought a coupe!
 

Hi all -- I've been a long-time lurker, but recently joined the ranks of Porsche owners with the purchase of an '86 Carrera. I'm having a ball with it so far, both driving it as well as beginning the process of fixing it up. I've really, REALLY appreciated all of the advice and wisdom I've gleaned from this forum, so thanks to you all, and Wayne in particular for making this resource available.

I've changed the engine and transmission oils, plus the fuel and air filters, removed the inop rear wiper and A/C (saving the parts, tho). There's a lot more I want/need to do to the car, but the drivetrain is solid and isn't giving any signals of impending doom (yes, I had a PPI with leakdown test performed prior to buying it.)

The car's a little worn, but not abused. In fact, if anything, it's been suffering from a bit of neglect over the past few years. The last service record is from about 10,000 miles ago - valves adjusted, new plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor - but that was in the late '90s. It's got a bit of a part-throttle surge, not terrible, but I'm wondering if I should freshen up those parts even with low miles on them? I want to run some BG44K through it prior to my next oil change and I'm checking for vacumn leaks as well. Any thoughts?

I now want a Coupe to keep my Targa company. Actually I tried to get the GF to sell her Accord and buy a Coupe so I could drive it, but she hasn't gone for it yet. I even let her drive the Targa on a twisty 2 lane and she liked it, but no joy so far. :( I haven't given up.

When I went after vacuum leaks I found 2 cracked intake gaskets.

The interesting part was while I was doing the "while your in there" stuff. The rubber goes with age so the one thing that really should be done is to replace the fuel lines. My car had no smell of fuel but one of the crimped on hoses would spin like a propeller once I removed it. :eek:

If your fuel lines haven't been done, any good hydraulics shop should be able to braze on fittings and replace the rubber with teflon lined hoses. Stainless braid is pretty but can act like a buzz saw and WILL cut through everything that it touches. You can get the stainless braid hose with an outer sheath and it will last forever.
(Mesa Hose in Costa Mesa recognized the parts in my hand! $165 for 3 lines.)

Congratulations on a nice ride! I too am a biker (novice) and was wondering how it would look like mounting my roadie on the Carrera. Finally, I already have an idea, as my 86 Carrera has the same color as yours. Now i'm in the market for a roof base system to mount this.

Great car! I just bought an '86 coupe as well, but haven't tried to mount a bike on it yet. I ride a Salsa Selma and an All City Mr. Pink.

Cabs are slower on the track so you made the right choice! (waiting for the assault from the cab owners!!!)

I'm not a road biker but I am an avid mtn biker and am intrigued by the mounting of your bike. That just looks cool as hell!!!

My rack is simple.....I have a truck bed bike mount attached to the roll bar. Made by Yakima and has a lock.

Bungee on the rear wheel to keep it from swinging around and whacking me in the head.

I'm using a Thule system (though you could use Yakima just as well), with standard gutter mount feet and a long tray bike mount. Very simple. Actually, it's the same set up I used on my old VW Beetle. I figured it would work on a coupe just as well and it does.

Finally got the roof rack for the coupe. Mounted the Thule Domestique few hours ago and test fitted the bike and drove at I-294 doing 80. It held up pretty good. Here is my RED on RED.

The Thule looks better on the PCar versus the CX7. Now I need to ride more before it gets cold.

Which 17" Fuchs replicas did you choose?

Are those wheels "trackable"? AKA, safe to use for DE's? They're cast AL right?

No idea if this is trackable as I read on previous discussions that they have runout issues. So I just use them mainly for daily drives. Surprisingly, they are kinda light as well.
