best oil for 1984 911?

I'm new with a 1984 911 targa 3.2 and I want to know the best oil for this car synthetic 15w40 or 15w50? or any recommendations???? A quick lube station told me that 15w40 is better because hold the same temp but is less thiner and run more faster on the system. but some friends with this cars told me that use 15 or 20w50

S L O W W A Y D O W N!!! Quick lube guy???? you are not taking this car there I am hoping - as for the "best oil" just search oil, get a couple 6 packs and if you dont smoke...a carton of cigs because you might start...and begin reading for me it's Brad Penn 20/50 every 4k miles do it yourself, never have jiffy lube or some random service station even wash your headlights... if you have to, get an independent mechanic that ONLY works on OLD Porsche's

Tail or tail-less? Are Boxsters "chic cars"? Which clutch is best? Best brake pads? How to pronounce "Porsche"? What "spares" should I keep in the car? How to re-finish Fuchs? A/C upgrades? Last edited by Ronnie's.930; 07-20-2012 at 07:41 AM..

Oh boy..an oil thread I'm a fan of Shell Rotella. 15w40 summer and 5w40 winter. Nice ZDDP numbers. Brad Penn is great too. Hard to find though. Swepco for the 915 gearbox..available from out host.

There's a VERY important reason why you should not take your 911 to a quick lube (or other general shop) for an oil change -- our cars have a rather unique dry sump oil system and require oil to be drained from two different locations (the tank on the right side of the engine and the bottom of the crankcase). Few folks not experiences with our cars' peculiarities would know how to do this (or expect the 3 gallons of oil that quickly pours out). That said, my 911 is the easiest oil change i've ever done -- both drain plugs are easily accessed with the car on the ground and the filter is super-convenient, just be sure you have a drain pan big enough to hold the oil and a few gallon wiper fluid bottles for transport to a recycler. Despite the ZDDP issues, I've been using mobil 1 15-50 for the past 70k miles without issue.

OOpps, here we go again. I use brad penn 20 50. Have a tail but want a duck, like my 17 inch firestone tires, am thinking about A/C install, have swapped in a 930 engine and use a Garrett turbo, installed WMI, like front spoilers effect, regularly race against fast newer cars, am considering my oil cooling setup etc.........

FWIW,....I run BP 20W-50, year round in the deep Southeast...It's changed every ~3K miles with a fresh filter, with Stavely oil analysis done each time. DEFINATELY no additives. I get it from LN Engineering (Charles has been a major contributor in the oil amalysis circle),..to my door. BEST! Doyle

Quick lube station with your 911... your'e kidding?? Employee scenrio... dah, how come I keep pouring oil in and won't show on the dip stick?! Maybe all they could do is smear KY on the seat.

Ahh the life of a 911 owner wish there was two locations on my car but there are three just one more step. And then filling it takes time to get it topped off right. I would never take my car to one of those places not a P car that is what these forums are about diy...... Also asked the same question on the 964 board on the Rennlist before doing a search boy did that start a firestorm as everyone has the take on it. Got a pm from one long time user and buddy and he says do not ask anything about oil becuase this is what happens. Finally put in Mobile One after talking to some race buddies that have been on the track racin 911s since that were kids. Talked to a mech at one of the Porsche dealers here and he said the seals are not made for full syn oils so its a catch 22

intakexhaust and RW964 Im not taking my 911 to a quick lube.. I just ask the owner for the best oli for the car.. BUt I ask here because this is the best Porsche forum... I just have a Adavance auto parts and Pep Boys here and here in Puerto Rico 20w50 is not a popular oil so they dont have a lot of choices, just Mobile 1 synthetic 15w50 or penn regular 20w50 or synthetic, Regular castrol gtx 20w50, valvoline 20w50 regular. Synthetic or regular? with additive or with out?
