centerfill and expansion tank...

Lets say someone, in the heat of the moment, would had deleted the fuel lines that goes to the expansion tank, at the same time they deleted the conduit for the fender filler...what would be the unforeseen consequences of such foolishness?

my question really is, can things be ok without an expansion tank?

How are you planning on venting the tank?

the center fill gas cap is like one of a motorcycle; it lets air in and out.
is that the expansion tank's only purpose?
sorry if this is a dumb question, i just been looking at how other people did it and noticed than they kept those hoses.
my car has been working fine,I was just wondering if I made a mistake.

I was thinking the same thing, plus isn't it the perfect recipe for scratches on the hood and fenders when going to your local 76 station? And in Oregon you would be at the mercy of a 17 yo kid with a Summer job since you are not allowed to pump your own fuel...

You are fine. All a fuel tank needs is to be able breathe, carry on.

Nice work by the way, love it.

You sure that cap will do that? I have a bunch of motorcycles, and the caps on those are not vented... I think I"d double check that cap if I were you.

No, it does offer a little extra volume. You can accomplish the same thing by not filling your tank to the top of the neck. Just leave a little room when you fill it.

the only way the cap will vent is if you remove the gasket from it.
If not the tank will start to partially collapse under the vacuum of the
fuel pump.

I believe another proper way to do it is to weld a bung into the tank itself to accept a rollover-vent valve. They are cheap, from Summit and others. If you just leave the gasket off the cap you may get splashing/mist of petrol up on the windscreen, and if you have a rollover, you will be slipping gas out for a fire hazard. The rollover valves allow air in as fuel is used, prevents splashing out and keeps fuel leakage minimized in case of a rollover.

its becoming very rare to find a gas station with service in my area. I know of only 2 in the city.
I don't use them anyways. they charge a premium.
not the most practical thing, i agree, but not as bad as you might think, its not that far to reach, they are small cars.
plus, a cool thing is that you can pull left or right at the pump.

Yeah, for sure. However, in Oregon it is illegal to pump your own gas. There are NO self serve stations.

BTW, the centre fill looks great. I might be tempted though, to weld on a fin or something to the cap to make it easier to open, kinda like this one.

that is anoying. I guess you could get them to pump the gas in a can and fill yourself at home, if you were slightly obsessive has it always been like this?

TRE sells a cap with a fin like that...

I don't know how long OR has been that way. I live in Alberta so we don't have customer service here, anymore, just like most everywhere else...

The tank has to have a vent. You can install one w/o welding (if your tank is already installed in the car and filled with gas)

The center fill neck can be pierced (you can drill a hole on the back side of the neck below the drain pan, if you want it semi hidden) Suggestion- to reduce sparks hitting vapors
a) put a rag in the neck (with enough tail so you can pull it out when done) and stuff it below the drill point.
b) Cover the vents on the drill motor with duct tape . the short term use of the drill with the air vents covered should not damage the drill, but the tape will help keep sparks from igniting vapors
c) make sure you have a really sharp drill bit, coat it with grease.
This will capture the majority of shavings
d) identify what sort of threaded hollow fitting you can install in the hole. Most hardware stores can help with this. Get one that is at least 3/16" i.d. and you can install an outer o- ring on. It should be long enough so it can accomodate the thickness of the tube, the o rings (one on each side of the tube) , and two nuts
e) Install in the tube after drilling
f) Vacuum the remaining debris out before pulling the rag
g) make a round coil loop of the vent hose before routing it to the upper driver corner of the driver side trunk wall, where the oe vent hose attached
h) open beer and relax

I always thought self service gas stations went away in Oregon when pot was legalized.

The easy way to know if you need a vent-
Blau furnishes both types of 100mm dia. caps. Turn it over and on the underside you will find either ....."mit Luftung", which translates to with venting, or it'll say "Ohne Luftung"....which means not vented.

The only vent I have on my racecar is the vented Blau cap- it works great.
