CO%/Idle Adjustment - Edmonton, AB

Hey Guy's Can anyone recommend a shop they would trust in Edmonton Alberta to set the Idle mixture and Idle speed on an 1987 Carrera? I have used Eurasia Automotive in the past but they are booking into August. Just fixed an air leak and was hoping to get it done sooner. Thanks, ________________ 87 Carrera Coupe - Venetian Blau

There's not a lot of places in Edmonton I would trust. Hell, there's not a lot of Porsche places in Edmonton, period. I have used Eurasia in the past. I wasn't impressed. After speaking recently with Chad, one of the service writers, he told me that the tech that worked on my car wasn't with them any longer. That may be true, but I won't go there unless I have no other choice. I was talking to someone the other day and there is apparently a shop in the west end just north of Stony Plain road and a bit east (I think) of 184 St. I have never used them and don't even know their name. I believe they deal in European cars, so that might help. If you're just wanting to adjust the idle speed, here is a tip on Steve Wong's web site at the bottom of this page: http://www.911chips.com/dmeconvr.htm I don't think the idle mixture is user adjustable. I think it is regulated by the programming in the Motronics software (chip). What's up? Symptoms? Need a hand? I might be able to help or at least assist. There are a couple notations in the Bentley manual relating to the idle speed control valve testing and R & R. You have one of those, right? If not, time to get one. It's worth the hundred bucks.

Thanks for your response and input Kevin. The shop you speak of on Stony Plain Rd is called Karmac The German Auto House. I thought about calling them but the reviews on the net were sub par at best. I realize these can be subjective but wanted to see if there were any other opinions. The Idle mixture is adjustable although the adjustment hole has a plug that needs to be tapped and removed underneath the AFM. Steve Wong does have a good write up in one of the threads when I did a search addressing this adjustment using the voltage at the O2 sensor. I have set the adjustment this way already but other threads confirm a tool called a gas analyzer is required to set the parameters correctly. Unfortunately this requires me to use a shop that has the tool. Yep, the Bentley manual has been my best friend! Wouldn't even imagine doing anything to the car without it. Thanks again, _____________________ 87 Carrera Coupe

				CO Mixture

I'm also in Edmonton ('89 Cabriolet). Eurasia "adjusted" my CO and fixed a rusty bolt for $200. No noticeable improvements in idle or drivability. Instead, I use a seperate wideband O2 so that I can see A/F ratios at any rpm and load while I drive. I can also "tweak" the chip slightly with a chip burner. Or, if you need to know CO, you could get a Gunson Gastester for around $200, but they are not as accurate or reliable as one in a shop. Did you try Ital Motors on 101st and Kingsway?

Yes, I do need to set the CO%. Monitoring the A/F ratio's moving forward seems like a good idea. Pelican has some nice monitors. I have not heard of Ital Motors but I will definitely give them a call. Thanks for your input.

I'm in the same boat,..that is, the need to get this mixture checked. I'm considering getting a test device to get it done,..I could even share with fellow PP;'s...... I'd take some recco's as to what's the best out there... I'm not into altering the factory setup (even gauges),..but am simply looking to get the BEST piece of test gear out there to quantify according to Porsche specs. Thnaks, Doyle

you can convert the CO numbers directly to Air Fuel Ratio [AFR] do a Google search for a chart. Our host sells the Daytona Sensors AFR and it is a great value and works well. Here is my permanent installation. the upper digital readout is battery voltage. Lower is AFR. You can plug your computer into that mini USB connector and download up to 2 hours of data....AFR and RPM.

Wow, that's a nice set up! So how does one tweak the engine to determine optimal settings once the information from a AFM is reviewed. Do you just play with the the idle mixture screw? For the 200 bucks they want to adjust the CO once, my thoughts are to invest in one of these meters. --------------------------- 87 Carrera Coupe Last edited by T-RONE; 07-19-2012 at 05:52 AM..

T-Rone, if your interested in tweaking for best performance / fuel economy throuout the RPM band, you would need a wideband logger like dicklague (very nice setup by the way), a chip burner, and a spare chip.
